Chabot College September 1998 Replaced Fall 2010 Course Outline for Photography 62 PORTFOLIO WORKSHOP Catalog Description: 62 - Portfolio Workshop May be repeated 3 times 3 units Visual and technical problems of assembling a portfolio. Emphasis on individual projects and the production of a finished portfolio of black and white and/or color images. Prerequisite: Photography 50. Strongly recommended: Photography 60 or 61. 2 hours lecture, 4 hours laboratory. [Typical contact hours: lecture 35, laboratory 70] Prerequisite Skills: Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to: 1. demonstrate an understanding of how light and chemicals interact with film and paper to create photographic images; 2. demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the essential mechanisms of the camera and the functional relationships of those mechanisms; 3. demonstrate a working knowledge of various photographic materials, including film, printing paper, and photo chemicals; 4. develop black and white film and make contact prints and enlargements from negatives; 5. spot and dry mount black and white photographs; 6. demonstrate an appreciation for the importance of a well conceived and executed photograph; 7. articulate critical responses to photographic images. Expected Outcomes for Students: Upon completion of the course, the student should demonstrate an ability to: 1. appreciate the special problems involved in selling and exhibiting; 2. understand various historical and critical issues regarding color and black and white photographs; 3. define an area of photography of special interest and value to him/her and proposed a design to explore that area; 4. critically evaluate the progress of his/her project/portfolio at every stage of production as well as joining in evaluating the projects/portfolios of classmates; 5. produce a project/portfolio of a quality suitable for exhibition or submission in support of future employment applications; 6. work intensively and with strong self-direction to explore, in depth, concepts and photography techniques of specialized interest to the advanced student.
