THEORY & TECHNIQUE OF DEFENSIVE FOOTBALL
Catalog Description:
PHED 26 – Theory & Technique of Defensive Football
2 units
Analysis and examination of various approaches to defensive intercollegiate football. Includes all aspects
of defensive football; kick off, punt rush, punt return and P.A.T./FG rush. The class will meet 2 hours per
week. May be repeated two times.
Prerequisite Skills:
None
Expected Outcomes for the Students:
Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:
1. comprehend and appreciate intercollegiate football;
2. identify and analyze the opponent's defense;
3. understand the kicking game philosophies;
4. understand defensive football at Chabot College.
Course Content:
A. Defense
1. Purpose of Defensive Football
a. Physical and psychological approach to defensive football.
b. Stopping the offensive rushing game.
c. Utilizing defense for a scoring opportunity.
2. Defensive Alignments and Responsibilities
a. Various position alignments
1.) Defensive line.
2.) Defensive line backers.
3.) Defensive backs.
3. Techniques for Each Defensive Position
4. Strategy Against Various offensive Philosophies
5. Defensive strategy through:
a. scouting reports;
b. film analysis;
c. game plan orientation.
6. Objectives and goals in defending opponents.
