SPORTS OFFICIATING
Catalog Description:
PHED 23 – Sports Officiating
2 units
Theory and practical application of sports officiating with emphasis on the rules, techniques and
mechanics, of officiating. 1 hour lecture, 3 hours laboratory. May be repeated three times.
Prerequisite Skills: None
Expected Outcomes for the Students:
Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:
1. have a basic knowledge of the rules of sports officiating;
2. have a basic understanding of the philosophy of sports officiating;
3. have participated in a meaningful laboratory experience in sports officiating;
4. qualify for admission to at least one recognized officials association.
Course Content:
1. Rule book for each sport.
2. Appropriate case books as they relate to the rules.
3. Mechanics of officiating each sport including positions, signals, and responsibilities.
4. Officiating intramural, intrasquad, and scrimmage games at Chabot/LPC and/or local high schools
and junior highs.
5. Observation of a certified official handling an athletic event.
