Course Outline for Physical Education 2
SPRINGBOARD DIVING
Catalog Description:
PHED 2SPD – Springboard Diving
1 unit
Students should be instructed in the proper form and technique of dives suited to each individual's level of
skill and ability. They should be exposed to the common principles of gravity, momentum, rotation, and
kinetic energy. The students should gain an appreciation and understanding of competitive springboard
diving as seen through the eyes of a knowledgeable spectator. Prerequisite: Ability to swim in deep water.
The class will meet 3 hours per week.
Prerequisite Skills:
Ability to swim in deep water.
Expected Outcomes for the Students:

Exercise program special to diving.
Techniques of dive execution.
Grouping and naming of dives.
Safety and precautions in diving.
Dives to be Taught
a. Front Dive.
b. Back Dive.
c. Reverse Dive.
d. Inward Dive.
e. Forward Dive 1/2 Twist.
f. Optional dives as needed.
The course will be taught so the student can gain confidence quickly and progress at his or her own rate
of speed.
Methods of Presentation:
The lecture-demonstration method will be used with active participation of the student the primary method
of learning.

Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
Students will have the opportunity to see their progress through the use of a diving check off list and use of
video playback when available. Attendance and participation at each class session is a big factor in grade
determination. Progress will also be observed throughout the quarter by the instructor with the course
concluding with a written and skill examination.

Special Student Material:
Appropriate type of swim wear will be used in the class.
