Project Status Update
Doug Horner reviewed status of all open/active projects currently under bid or in
construction. Highlights included:
Wanda Wong reported that faculty have expressed a concern that a move out of
the Villas over the Dec’09/Jan’10 holiday break will not give enough time to
unpack boxes. Doug H reported that boxes will only be moved into the IOB near
the end of the Holiday. It will be important to pack and label boxes well.
B4100, Strength and Fitness Center is being delayed at DSA review because of
the State furlough of personnel and the ban of all overtime hours. We are
monitoring the progress closely but will probably need to delay the start of the
project.
Rumor Control
Will the Villas remain after the offices are vacated to fill the IOB? The campus
has only leased the Villas for 2 years which is done this December. The Villas will
be removed at that time.
Other Matters Initiated
Jamie Cornejo, student at Chabot, addressed the group. He and another student
are interested in fundraising for a memorial plaque and/or tree for the former
adjunct professor Ashok Malik. He wanted to coordinate his efforts with the
Facilities Committee per President Barberena’s advice. Some comments were:
looking into existing Board of trustees policy regarding memorials, possibly
planting a native California flora garden for the use of classes, the possible
sensitivity to a memorial plaque on campus when the only other one known of is
for Reed Buffington – a campus icon. A recommendation was made that it may
be easier to create a memorial plaque and hang it in the discipline office area.
Some issues involving an outdoor plaque may include: material and maintenance
requirements, size, location, necessary text approval?

Facilities and Sustainability Committee Minutes

Pg. 2
Jennifer Lange asked about the status of any improvements to Building 2100.
There are no Measure B funds budgeted for the renovation of Building 2100. An
initial request for funding (IPP) was made to the State last year and was rejected.
It will be made again this year. If it is successful Chabot will follow with an FPP.
Sally Jahnke helped with the original IPP. This still will not cover the campus
share of funding that will be required.
John Komisar asked why some parking spaces in Lot H are for students and
some are for staff. He thinks they should all be the same. Doug H asked if he
was proposing making all of Lot H for students. John would prefer dedicating all
of the closest parking spots for staff. Darrell D offered that the closest student
spots are usually parked in by staff (also in Lot B) anyway so it doesn’t really
matter.
Gordon Watt pointed out that with some temporary moves happening this summer
the phone system will be over burdened and there are not enough lines to go
around. Doug H suggested that we use VOIP to alleviate our problems. It was
pointed out that the District CTO will not allow the campus to use VOIP. It was
verified that most large companies and campuses use VOIP systems.
It was asked why the college cannot use the walkway between B800 and B900.
Campus Security believes that the pathway is too dark at night and does not want
to be responsible for unlocking and locking the two gates at night, allowing use
during the day.
