1.
Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 2:05 p.m. by committee chair Wayne Pitcher.
2.
Minutes of February 2, 2010
Tom Clark corrected the spelling of Michael Sherburne’s name and corrected an entry in
the BMW section: “The degree will provide increased opportunities for entry-level
employment with BMW…” Wayne asked that “(through 2/16/10 meeting)” be added to
the Fall 2009/Spring 2010 curriculum cycle implementation entry.
MSC (Cirera-Perez/Ogman & Buti) to approve the minutes of February 2, 2010, as
corrected.
3.
Review of out-of-date courses
Wayne distributed a list of courses received to date with complete information included
in the packets and a rationale page listing Science/Math courses to be deleted. He noted
that Jane Church should be contacted if instructors need Trans/Bacc forms for their
packets. He also stated that instructors who make a good-faith effort to revise out-ofdate outlines will have their courses reviewed this semester, and while the revised
courses will not be removed from the catalog, the updates will not go into effect until
Fall 2011. In answer to a question by Kaaren, consensus was that requests for deletion
received after today’s meeting but before the catalog deadline should be removed from
the catalog.

Changes that need committee discussion
Mass Communications 14, Writing, Photography, and Website Production for a
Weekly Publication, 1 - 2 units
Gary Carter explained that the full-time instructor in this discipline has retired,
and his adjunct replacement has done these revisions.
Mass Comm 14 was submitted as “1 or two units/3 hours. Discussion elicited
that the intent was to change to variable hours. The title is also being changes.
Needed:
•
•
•
•
Change units to “1–2 units”
Correct hours to 6 hours “laboratory”
Add “[Typical contact hours: 52.5–105]”
Update the “Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress”
section by adding “Typical Assignments”
Mass Communications 15, Publications—Editorial Leadership and Production,
3 units
The committee confirmed repeatability as listed on the outline.
Needed:
•
•
•
Correct hours to “36 hours laboratory”
Add “[Typical contact hours: 52.5]”
Update the “Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress”
section by adding “Typical Assignments”
The Mass Communications courses were referred back to faculty for correction.
Photography 55, Careers in Photography, 1 unit
It was noted that the outline submitted as “3 units” was in error. The typo was
corrected and the course was moved to “Consent.”
Photography 61, Digital Color Materials and Processes, 3 units
Curriculum Committee
2-16-10, page 5
Course is being retitled from Color Materials and Processes and the prerequisite
is being changed. Gary explained that chemical color processing is no longer
being used on most campuses due to the cost and hazards involved.
Jane noted that there are enough changes to the course to warrant a new number.
Patricia agreed.
Needed:
•
Content review for prerequisite.
•
Updated program page
Faculty were asked to bring the proposal back as a new course. Photography 61 will
not be deleted until the new course is approved and published.
POLITICAL SCIENCE
Political Science Rubric Change
Sara Parker reported that Chabot and LPC have different focuses in their
political science programs. Chabot is more global, while LPC is more American
in focus. Also, POSC is a more widely recognized rubric than POLI; it is used
by the CSU system.
There was discussion on whether LPC might also change their rubric. Sara has
discussed the changes with her counterpart at LPC, and he seemed enthusiastic
about what she is doing. Wayne reiterated the Board’s belief that the campuses
are “the same.”
Political Science 10, Selected Topics in Comparative Politics, 3 units
Patricia asked whether Jane had reviewed the variable content aspects of the
course. She noted that UC sometimes has problems with variable content
courses. She gave suggestions on how the outline might be revised to make it
acceptable to UC.
There was discussion on the difficulty of determining that a repeat had “different
topics.” Wayne suggested removing the repeatability. The faculty member
agreed.
Needed:
•
Content review for English 1A advisory.
AA Degree, Political Science
New degree. In a discussion of the goal of the “Option” section, the following
courses were suggested as additions: Religious Studies 50, PsychologyCounseling 13 and 14, Psychology 1, Sociology 1, and Business 12.
MSC (Shannon/Victoria) to accept the Political Science presentation, including
rubric change, and allowing the instructor two weeks to make necessary revisions to
outlines and the program page.
7.
Good of the Order
Wayne distributed a page outlining a proposed process to deal with rubric/course number
changes. This was proposed by LaVaughn Hart, LPC’s Curriculum Committee chair, at
a recent District CurricUNET steering committee meeting. Wayne estimates that 147
courses would be affected by this process.
