Update on progress of proposals
Jane reported that there are about 26 courses still at level 4, plus about 15 Theater and 10
Tutoring courses to come. She asked the voting members to please review program
proposals.
6.
Colloquia
Jane distributed draft guidelines for the future processing of colloquia, citing the posting
in the catalog of Film 9 and the existence of a course outline for this course as evidence
that it is, in fact, a viable course. She noted that each discipline may have only one “9”
class, and that the class is not repeatable. Dov spoke to the desire for flexibility in
subject matter. Jane suggested using experimental courses rather than colloquia. The
stand-alone issue will also need to be addressed.
Discussion tabled.
7.
Curriculum Calendar
Jane is planning on a meeting next week and then reverting to meeting the first and third
Tuesdays beginning on April 16.
9.
Good of the Order
Larry Leach explained his rationale for the two Journalism degrees, the AA and the
AA-T. Increasing the number of units in the AA gives students planning on looking for
work after graduation additional experience which will give them a competitive edge in
the job market. Those transferring to a 4-year university will receive that experience in
their upper-division coursework.

Jane asked about the high unit major in Mass Communications. That course has been on
the books for a number of years. This year’s proposal was only to change the numbers
on a couple of revised courses. These are FYI changes.
Discussion included:
•
Separating the course into areas of emphasis (this would result in duplication of
the Journalism and Radio and Television programs);
•
Reducing units by changing the degree to an AS;
•
Reducing units by deleting advertising from the program; perhaps adding a
certificate to address that portion of the program.
Jane distributed documents from the State Chancellor’s Office dealing with course
repetition and course repeatability.
