CHABOT COLLEGE Curriculum Committee October 16, 2012 Members Present: Debbie Buti, Jane Church, Begoña Cirera-Perez, Donna Gibson, Dov Hassan, Jay Mumford, Don Plondke, Linnea Wahamaki Ex-Officio: Edna Danaher, Kaaren Krueg Guests: Tom Clark 1. Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 2:15 by the chair, Jane Church. She thanked Linnea Wahamaki for taking minutes at the last meeting. 2. Minutes of September 18 and October 2, 2012 MSC (Hassan/Mumford) to approve the minutes of September 18 as presented. Debbie noted the misspelling of her name in the minutes of October 2. It was also noted that the Staff Development Day mentioned in Item 5 is on October 30, and that it is important that we do a CurricUNET training on that day to help faculty meet the November 30 curriculum deadline. MSC (Cirera-Perez/Mumford) to approve the minutes of October 2 as corrected. 3. October 30 Flex Day Jane will work with the Staff Development Committee to place a training workshop on the Flex Day schedule. She asked if Curriculum Committee reps feel comfortable in their ability to train members of their divisions. They do. There was discussion on whether or not we should ask for more than one computer lab. It was agreed that one room would be sufficient. 4. Moving Course Outlines Through the Queue Jane would like to streamline the process of approving recent outlines on which the only change is to remove repeatability. She asked reps to send her a list of those courses, and she and Kaaren will make and approve the changes and bypass the rest of the queue. (The dates on these outlines will be changed to Fall 2013.) In other discussion on moving course outlines through the queue in a timely manner, it was noted that several approvals are needed before the outline reaches the committee review level. Jane demonstrated that the Course Comparison (CC) screen makes it clear what changes have been made, and would aid Division Deans and Curriculum Committee Reps in working through large lists of needed approvals. Dov Hassan reported that he made an announcement that once his division members receive CurricUNET email notification it is their responsibility to review and comment on proposals within two weeks; at the end of that time, he will approve and send the course on to the next level. Curriculum Committee 10/16/12, Page 2 Jane said that she established a rule that she will not add adjuncts to the lists of Curricular Area Faculty without the Division Dean’s approval. 5. Approval of ESL 127 and ESL 149O course proposals Linnea presented. ESL 127, ESL Pronunciation Lab, 0.5 unit. Repeatability has been removed, assignments added, and software updated. This course is taught in PATH. There is an instructor of record, but students work independently, utilizing various resources via a BlackBoard shell. Discussion on Methods of Evaluating Student Progress yielded the decision that “Portfolios” could serve as the final project. MSC (Mumford/Gibson) to approve ESL 127. ESL 149O, Writing Workshop for Non-Native Speakers, 1 unit This experimental course is funded through the BSI grant. It will be offered in PATH, beginning two weeks into the Spring 2013 semester so that instructors have a chance to get to know their students and recommend the class to those who might benefit. Students earn grades by completing activities; a point system will be established. Needed: Add Methods of Evaluating Student Progress, H. Portfolio (see discussion above.) We will not vote on this proposal. When it works through the CurricUNET process to the next “Hold” point, we can ask for this change and it will open the outline up so that the originator can make the revision. 6. Repeatability Jane reported on a workshop she attended. Erik Shearer of Napa Valley college simplified the situation by saying, “Nothing is repeatable; everything is in families.” In fact, per Title 5, the only courses that are repeatable are • those required to meet lower division standards for transfer to CSU/UC; • vocational or academic competition courses (such as forensics); • intercollegiate athletic courses. Repeatability for career currency is handled by petition. A new petition form is being developed. 7. TMC Proposals Jane has learned that 80% of existing AA/AS Degrees that could be AA/AS-T will be expected to be submitted as such by Fall 2013. She distributed a sheet showing TMC templates that have been developed and how our degrees fit into the list. According to her calculations, we will need to develop 7 more AA/AS-Ts. She met with Keith Mehl to work on an AS-T in Computer Science. They were able to fit our courses into the Curriculum Committee 10/16/12, Page 3 template for a total of 63 units; however the TMC must be no more that 60 units. In order to propose this degree, some of our mathematics and computer science courses/sequences would need to be rewritten at lower unit values. 8. Good of the Order Jane has spoken with Dr. Sperling about the need to have the VP Academic Services more involved with the curriculum process. She also addressed the need for 2 CAH release time for the CurricUNET chair. 9. kk 10-18-12 The meeting was adjourned at 4:00 p.m. Next meeting: November 6, 2012. c:\documents\word\curric\2012-13\10-16-12.min.doc
