Audience: Budget Committee, Technology Committee, Administrators
Purpose: To be read and responded to by Budget Committee and to inform priorities of the Technology
Committee.
Instructions: Please fill in the following as needed to justify your requests. If you're requesting classroom
technology, see http://www.chabotcollege.edu/audiovisual/Chabot%20College%20Standard.pdf for the
brands/model numbers that are our current standards. If requesting multiple pieces of equipment,
please rank order those requests. Include shipping cost and taxes in your request.
Please note: Equipment requests are for equipment whose unit cost exceeds $200. Items which are
less expensive should be requested as supplies. Software licenses should also be requested as
supplies.

Rationale*
In general the databases are the basic
online resources for students to
support their research for courses.
The increase is due to 4 items: 1. 1K
due to price increases in our current
suite. 2. 2K for using StackMap, a
Web/Library 2.0 service that will
identify on a map where a Library
book exactly is located. Includes a one
time set-up fee, of which it would be
1.2K subscription thereafter. 3. 7K
for Films on Demand, a video
streaming service (including a
subscription to over 11,200 education
online closed-captioned videos) for
instruction and student research. 4.
3K to get the database, Dental and
Oral Sciences Source. This would
replace the dentistry journals we
currently get each year and would
minimize our periodicals budget.
Many of our periodicals are due to
accreditation requirements, support
faculty and student research, along
with our browsing section
Closed captioned DVD’s of
educational, documentaries,
independent films, movies, and other
educational programs.

This software would have the student
computers be “slaved” to follow what
the instructor is demonstrating. Once
the demonstration is done and it is
time for hands-on, the computers
would be freed for students to do
research. Heighten concentration and
address more learning styles.
Free for classes less than 40 students,
but library orientations in 107A and B
are at least 35 students and most
often above 40. This will enable
classroom participation when handson is not available, thus inviting
student learning.
119 has old antiquated equipment
that needs to be replaced for an
optimal learning environment. All
below add this.
Allows library to present to students
how to use reference books, use
indexes, and other paper sources as
examples.
Cost is dependent that speakers are
still in stock college-wide as they are
now and we can now use. Sound
equipment needs to be updated,
especially for our multi-media oriented
library skills courses.
Computer classrooms’ typical control
system
The 2 laptops we have are currently
being checked out, however
sometimes in 119 there are a few
students who do without a computer,
if we have more than 26 students in
that classroom. The additional laptop
would allow more hands-on in a library
orientation.

Hand-held pocket projectors allow
students to easily display materials
while they are in a study room working
on their projects. They can plug their
laptop, pad, or even smart phone into
this portable device.
Chabot and Las Positas Libraries would
like to update our district-wide catalog
to the 21st century at an affordable
cost. Worldshare offers federated
searching and many other state-of-the
art library features while SirsiDynix
does not. Worldshare’s costs include
many features that Sirsi does not offer
and/or would charge at least $10,000$15,000 more annually (district-wide)
Federated searching allows students
to search across the college’s suite of
library databases, allowing students a
one stop place to search the vast
information resources that exist in
electronic format.
*These costs are half since we share
with Las Positas Library.
**$4,000 of this cost is approximately
40 hours of systems librarian working
during summer implementation
period.
**$29,762 = half of contract cost and
one-time migration fee ($10,000) [cost
shared with Las Positas Library]
* Rationale should include discussion of impact on student learning, connection to our strategic plan
goal, impact on student enrollment, safety improvements, whether the equipment is new or
replacement, potential ongoing cost savings that the equipment may provide, ongoing costs of
equipment maintenance, associated training costs, and any other relevant information that you believe
the Budget Committee should consider.
