Ohio's Regions, a new weekly newsletter from the
Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs and
Cleveland State University. We'll search Ohio's papers
to bring you economic news and key happenings that
impact Ohio's regions.

Editorial: Work begins to return air park to its
potential (Wilmington News Journal, January 19,
2010) With today's anticipated announcement that DHL
Express will donate the air park in Wilmington to the
Clinton County Port Authority, now a diligent and
concerted effort is required of local officials to revitalize
the air park so it can re-establish its place as a focal
point for employment and economic development in
Southwest Ohio.
Editorial: Housing coalition for the city (Akron
Beacon Journal, January 19, 2010) Looking at the
foreclosure crisis as an opportunity. Akron and other
cities have taken a punishing hit from the collapse of
the housing market and the number of foreclosed or
abandoned properties as the foreclosure crisis
continues. That difficult turn of events explains why the
city of Akron has chosen to venture cautiously into
home building.
Meeting with NASA boss encourages Ohio
lawmakers about future of Cleveland's Glenn
Research Center (The Plain Dealer, January 20, 2010)
NASA boss Charles Bolden, a former astronaut
appointed by Obama last year, "clearly understood
NASA Glenn's significance as an economic catalyst for
the state."
Four Northeast Ohio affordable housing project
awarded stimulus money (The Plain Dealer, January
20, 2010) The Ohio Housing Finance Agency is using
federal stimulus money to help developers jump-start
construction on 13 affordable housing projects,
including four in Northeast Ohio.
Central Ohio bucks trend of rising suburban
poverty (Columbus Dispatch, January 21, 2010) While
big-city poverty continues to rise nationally, the
increase in the number of poor people living in the
suburbs has been even greater -- but not in central
Ohio or the state's other cities.
Leaders launch P-16 education program
(Youngstown Business Journal, January 21, 2010)
Community and business leaders want to develop
educational programs geared at preparing young
people to work in the global economy, and in the
process strengthen this region's economic base.
More neighborhood revitalization funds coming
(Record Herald, January 21, 2010) Although the
amount is not yet known, Fayette County will receive
new Recovery Act funds to help aid the county
purchase and rehabilitate vacant homes.
Area's rental market might heat up this year
(Columbus Dispatch, January 21, 2010) Fewer central
Ohio offices are expected to sport "for lease" signs this
year than last, a real-estate company study shows,
while apartment vacancies are expected to remain
stable.
Editorial: Port, Lakeland plan deserves close look
(News Herald, January 21, 2010) Officials want to fully
coordinate the Port Authority's existing Small Business
Development Center in Painesville, which offers
counseling, coaching and training to pre-venture and
existing businesses, and Lakeland's job training and
business educational programs.
Re-Inventing Small Business in Appalachia
presents Fast Pitch (The Marietta Register, January
21, 2010) Have an idea or invention but not sure what
to do next or where to go to get information? "Fast
Pitch" is an opportunity for inventors, entrepreneurs,
and anyone with an idea for a new business or
technology to come before a panel of experts and
receive a quick analysis of what to do next. "ReInventing Small Business in Appalachia" brings
together resources from state and local organizations
designed to foster technology and innovation.
Editorial: Preventive measures (Akron Beacon
Journal, January 22, 2010) There is no letup in the grim
news on home foreclosures. This week, in its first
report in more than a year, the State Foreclosure
Prevention Working Group warned that indicators point
to more foreclosures in 2010 than in 2009.
Public asked to help 'brand' Toledo (Toledo Free
Press, January 22, 2010) Toledo Brand Initiative, a
public and private partnership to "brand" Toledo, is
underway gathering feedback from area residents and
businesses. Through public summits the group hopes
to define how the region sees itself and in turn develop
a campaign to market Toledo.
KSU contributes $1.9 billion to area's economy,
president reports (Hudson Hub Times, January 24,
2010) Alumni, students, faculty and staff of Kent State
University pump $1.9 billion annually into Northeast
Ohio's economy, KSU President Lester Lefton
announced Jan. 21.
School leaders lobbying legislators (Cincinnati
Enquirer, January 24, 2010) In recent years area
superintendents are finding themselves traveling to
their state capitals to meet or testify before legislators
about school financing and education issues. In Ohio,
the stakes for fewer state funding dollars for local
districts - especially high growth districts in Greater
Cincinnati's northern suburbs - have been higher in
recent years and made all the more urgent by the
nation's continued recession
State economy still reeling(Bucyrus Telegraph
Forum, January 25, 2010) More bad news about
Ohio's economy preceded Barack Obama's visit to
Elyria on Friday, though the president promised, "I
won't stop fighting to bring back jobs here."
