Minutes of the CHAS Senate March 3, 2014 3:30 p.m., Dean’s Conference Room, CAC Members present: Bohnenkamp (Communication Sciences & Disorders), Brand (Communication Studies), Doely (Art), Greenhalgh (Technology), Haack (Dean), Heinzel (Earth Science), Hill (Philosophy & World Religions), Manfredi (Chemistry & Biochemistry), Morgan (Physics and Science Education), Poleksić (Computer Science), Tamplin (Biology), Vanderwall (Languages & Literatures), Vorobiev (Music), Wood (Mathematics). 1. Chair Heinzel initiated an electronic curricular vote on February 12, 2014: The Department of Technology proposes to change their doctoral degree back to Doctor of Industrial Technology, as the degree Doctor of Technology is not well-‐recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the National Science Foundation at this time. Affirmative votes were cast by Senators Greenhalgh, Vanderwall, Bullard, Bohnenkamp, Wood, Poleksić, Doely, Hill, Brand, and Glockner; the motion passes. 2. Heinzel noted via email on February 12, 2014 that the award structure for the James Lubker Research Award still states that there be two applicants from CHFA and two from CNS; our current recommendations are for one from the former CHFA and three from CNS. Heinzel communicated that the senate feels we are one college and all nominees are worthy of consideration, and urges the award committee to update their regulations to reflect the current college structure. Wood voiced strong support of this view. Chair Heinzel called the meeting to order at 3:33 p.m. 3. Welcome 4. Announcements. Dean Haack shared several announcements: a. Cabinet meeting: The cabinet met today from 9-‐12; the first hour was spent discussing the identity theft problem. The source of the leak is not known, but all faculty are encouraged to follow the steps outlined in email to all faculty and staff. Oakland University in Michigan and the University of Maryland have been hit with similar attacks this year. Anyone in need of help in dealing with the situation is encouraged to contact the EAP. b. United Faculty review: Heinzel asked about the review of administrators conducted by UF last year. Haack stated that the results have been shared with the President, but not disseminated beyond that. 5. Old business c. Faculty awards: The awards outlined on the college website represent a merger of awards awarded by the previous colleges; no faculty-‐selected awards have been given since the merge. The award for teaching excellence has been awarded; recipients have been selected by the Dean’s Student Advisory Committee. Hill proposes that we award a single faculty excellence award (encompassing scholarship, teaching, and service), two awards for excellence in teaching in departmental programs, two awards for achievement in research or creative activity, and one for excellence in teaching in the liberal arts core. Senators discussed proposed dollar amounts and bodies tasked with selection of winners. Further discussion included criteria for the faculty excellence award – many criteria were adapted from the Regents’ Award for Faculty Excellence. Additionally, Wood suggested that we add a college-‐wide service award. Hill moves that the college create five categories of awards: (A) one award for faculty excellence, (B) two awards for excellence in teaching of departmental awards, (C) one award for excellence in teaching in the Liberal Arts Core, (D) two awards for excellence in research or creative activity, and (E) one award for excellence in service. The first will be selected by the CHAS Senate, the second by the Dean’s Student Advisory Council, and the final three by the Department Heads. A document describing the structure of awards will be edited and disseminated to senators for further consideration. Vanderwall seconded. The motion passed 11-‐0-‐1 (Bohnenkamp abstained.) 6. New business: No new business was discussed. 7. Vanderwall moved to accept the minutes from December 2, 2013 and February 3, 2014; Bohnenkamp seconded. The motion passed unanimously. 8. Hill moved to adjourn; Manfredi seconded. The motion passed unanimously. The senate adjourned at 4:33 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Jeff Morgan CHAS Senate Secretary
