President’s Report
Yvonne Wu Craig reported on the DBSG (District Budget Study
Group) budget shortfall the district is facing. A message from
Scott lay reported that there will be another budget cut in
February. There will be about an 8.7 million deficit added to
the 2 million from before. This is roughly a 10miillon deficit
district wide.
The DBSG is going over the guiding principles on what to
preserve and what to cut. Yvonne Wu Craig has put together a
PowerPoint presentation on ideas such as closing the campus
on Fridays in the spring, hiring a general counsel, not
outsourcing printing costs, suspending travel and conference
costs and cutting professional services. She will present this at
the next DBSG meeting on March 2nd. Any additional
suggestions should be sent to Yvonne Wu Craig by March 1st.
She feels this PowerPoint will start the dialog and discussion
on really tough choices without cutting programs and people.
The DBSG is meeting every two weeks. Classified Senate gets
two seats on this committee. Yvonne Wu Craig and Kyle
Judson are usually in attendance. The next meeting is March
2nd, 12:30 – 2:00 PM at the District Office.

At the last Board of Trustees meeting Chabot College
manager’s contracts were pulled from the agenda to give the
new president time to review them. The non renewals were
left on the agenda.

The Cost is $7.80 each with a magnet and $6 each with a pin. She presented

SEIU Report
Catherine Powel reported that the first meeting with mediator is on March 8th.
They will talk about the discussion items. Retirement benefits and Health
Insurance are the major sticking points.
They are also negotiating furlough days. The District would like five furlough
days. SEIU representatives would only like two. The furlough days would be
taken within the contract length.
Mark Smythe and Catherine Powell are working on getting a site meeting
together. At this point the understanding is that the work schedule for this
summer will proceed as usual with the Four, 10 hour days.

Discussion Items
Motion on voting in new Classified Senate Representative, JoAnn Cerefice
Motion to approve by: Debra Kling
Seconded by: Nate Moore
Motion passed
ASCC Scholarship Committee Representative Approval
Yvonne Wu Craig said every year Classified Senate sends a representative to
serve on the ASCC Scholarship committee. Art Barboza was selected as the
Classified Representative. He is willing to volunteer again for this year. The
consensus of the Classified Senate was that Art Barboza will serve on the ASCC
scholarship committee. David Rigunay said that the scholarship essays are made
as anonymous as possible to prevent any favoritism of candidates.
Meet Dr. Sperling, Chabot College President
Dr Susan Sperling spoke with the Classified Senate. She expressed her willingness
to attend Classified Senate meetings, with enough notice, anytime she is invited.
She asked for a list of things Classified Senate would like her to know in moving
forward as the new Chabot College President. As she proceeds in this office she
would like everyone to observe her actions and draw conclusions based on those
actions. She would like to be judged on the walk she walks not on talk she talks.
She presented the senate with the news that former Chabot/Las Positas
Chancellor, Ron Kong left money for professional development. The money used
be disbursed through CAPE but now she would like it go to Classified Senate. The
money may be used for professional development and conference attendance.
Catherine Gentiluomo brought up the new Classified Resource web page for the
president to review. This page is a resource for classified staff training and
orientation. This website was formed out of ideas that came out of the Classified
Retreat. The president said this resource page could be a model for faculty and
other programs across campus.
Nate Moore and Gordon Watt would like to create a checklist for new faculty and
staff for such things as turning in keys and key cards – an intake and exit
Classified Senate Meeting Minutes of Feb. 24, 2012 Rev: 3/20/12
procedure. This way they can resolve the communication and accountability
problem.
It was brought up that Classified Senate representatives have no stipends or
reimbursement for mileage available to attend district meetings unlike ASCC and
faculty associations. The ASCC bylaws require $400 be provided to send their
student trustee to attend Board meetings. Classified Senate has fundraisers to
raise money to send our representatives to the Board of Trustees meetings.
President Susan Sperling expressed shock at the lack of funding for a major
representative body (Classified Senate) on campus. She would like to know, by
the end of the year, what a reasonable budget would be for mileage, attendance
& meals for the Classified Senate president to attend district meetings.
President Susan Sperling said that among her top three goals are to maintain
through crisis as much that the college has been to this community over the last
century. To see that decisions are made according to processes that reflects our
values as a community in a participatory process.
She said she would like to take time to shadow different areas around campus to
really understand what people are doing.
Linda Wilson pointed out that the district spends hundreds of thousands dollars
on consultants. Outside consultants are hired to report on issues but they get the
information from the districts own staff and then take the credit and money.
President Sue Sperling said her number three priority is to make managers
understand that contracts are a two way street. If they have a question on
interpretation they shouldn’t do anything until they consult with the bargaining
unit.
In her meeting next week she plans to say that when a situation arises in which
there is a contractual issue, discuss it with the individual and their representative
before it becomes misinterpretation. The bargaining unit can help explain what
this means in this spirit.
President Susan Sperling said she does not know at this time what the thought is
about proceeding with summer session classes. She will know more next week
after February cuts are discussed.
Catherine Gentiluomo suggested limiting summer school classes to only a few
buildings to save on energy costs and staff workload.
Nate Moore suggested limiting emails to only what is important to everyone. He
also suggested updating the college website to get rid of outdated information.
Susan Sperling agreed to the importance of these issues.
Classified Senate Meeting Minutes of Feb. 24, 2012 Rev: 3/20/12
ACTION:
Yvonne Wu Craig will send a copy of her PowerPoint presentation for the DBSG
and the email sent to all Classified Professionals to Susan Sperling.
Susan Sperling said that the future vacancy of the position of college business
manager is a critical issue. She will take this issue up with the District Chancellor.
Susan Sperling stated that the Voc Tech programs are one of the most crucial
things we do as a community college. If it came down to a choice of which the
college had to get rid of, she would prefer to cut the Anthropology program
before she got rid of Voc Tech because of the meaningfulness of the program to
the community.
Catherine Powell expressed concern over the vacant Dean of Social Sciences
position.
Susan Sperling agreed that this is an issue. She said that input on the hiring
process for this position should come from all of stake holders including faculty
and staff, specifically the administrative assistants. All need to be consulted in a
decision like this.
Debra Kling said that the college can't afford to lose more deans. We are already
short on classified and administrative staff at that level yet heavy at district level.
Dunking Booth collaboration with ASCC
David Rigunay reported that the ASCC approved the Dunking booth for May 2nd.
They approved $150 dollars to split the rental of the booth. David Rigunay will
work with Lisa Carlsen on this fundraiser. Fundraiser will be 11:00 am – 2:00 PM
in Cesar Chavez Court. Nate Moore has volunteered to be dunked.
ACTION:
YWC will send out an email to ask faculty and staff to participate in being dunked.
Lisa Carlsen will print a schedule of who will be dunked when.
David Rigunay will ask ASCC for candidates of people they want to see dunked.
Rosie Mogle said this activity will be covered for liability though the college.
The ASCC Talent show is on April 16th in the PAC. K. Metcalf volunteered to be a
judge for the talent show. Tickets will go on sale shortly.
