Student Learning Outcomes Committee Meeting November 4, 2008 Room 3521, 12-1pm Present: Carolyn Arnold, Bruce Mayer, Barbara Ogman, Rebecca Otto, Wayne Phillips, Norberto Ruiz, Michelle Sherry, Stephen Small, Bernadette Zermeño Introduction: Rebecca Otto began the meeting with an explanation in regards to TITLE 3 grant money. There are funds that have been allocated to support the development of the SLOA cycle through Faculty Inquiry Groups. These groups would be paid for their services to help other faculty members at Chabot through pilot groups (Elumen and Critical Thinking Pilot Group). Also, since some disciplines do not have a full time faculty member, then adjunct faculty would be given the opportunity to develop the SLOA cycle. There is a possibility that the adjunct faculty and their trainers will be paid. Barbara Ogman suggested that a FIGS be offered to any faculty members who are interested in creating an assessment group. The group would need to write up a proposal that includes goals, timeline, and the members. Rebecca gave a summary about collected SLOs, the Elumen progress, and issues with the Business and P.E. division. P.E. represents 23% of Chabot College courses. Their SLOs have a huge impact on the overall percentage of SLOs written. Otto will be meeting with the PE dean to discuss this issue. The suggestion of creating umbrella SLOs to reflect the main goals of each group of classes was also given by committee members. To also make our overall SLO percentage better, Dr. Gene Groppetti will request that Deans clean out any inactive classes from our spreadsheets. Future of the SLOA Committee: Once we will have the SLOA cycle completely embedded within the curriculum and Program Review, Otto suggested that the outcomes and assessments would be held in the Center for Teaching and Learning. Jennifer Lange will staff the CTL, but it was recommended that the CTL hire a faculty member who has knowledge on the SLOA cycle. The question was addressed of what are the Center's main goals over the next five years. Program level Outcomes (see attached): Rebecca asked for suggestions on general outcomes for Program Level Outcomes. There was a general discussion involving whether all programs should use general Program Level Outcomes or should Programs to create their own specific Outcomes? Many of the committee members were using examples of their classes and certificates to try to understand how the Chabot College Learning Goals apply to different certificates. These Outcomes are broad, but efficient for all Programs to follow the same outline. The committee discussed how other colleges were assessing program level SLOs. It was restated that these goals would just be a starting point for the Programs. The main point given was that the college would be looking at the general population of students; how to improve their learning, not a student who only takes one course. Also, it was suggested that Program Review would be able to look at how each of these outcomes is addressed and achieved in the certificate or program. Suggestions were given to fix the outcomes. Committee members will also email any suggestions. Flex Day February: During, Flex Day, SLOA committee will be looking at SLOA cycles in the morning and then faculty will be reviewing curriculum in the afternoon. Again, the committee was happy about the amount of work completed this last Flex Day and that the push to complete the work was supported by the Deans. The next meeting, November 18, 2008, will be looking at Flex day. The main focus will be assessment and directions in what and how faculty will assess.
