Q & A MINUTES: 1. Meeting started at 12:05 with a welcome note from Christine. 2. Approval of Prior Minutes, 1/31/11. Last SLO meeting was combined with discipline lead meeting. Christine will be writing up a brief summary of the meeting since there was no note taker. 3. CLO Status • Fall 2011 Completion Report: Draft1: “Fall 2011 Courses that Require Assessment by FT + PT Faculty” It includes the list of all Fall 2011 courses that required assessment work. It does not include closing the loop work. It was compiled by Rob on Feb 1st, 2012. He took faculty’s report and then manually updated the other two drafts. To update the data manually is very intensive work. It cannot be done everyday. If anybody has updates, people should notify the SLOAC Rep/Discipline Lead/Dean. The responsible person has not been decided yet. It will be decided in two weeks. The information in the draft is separated by divisions. Good work by all full-time and adjuncts. Applied tech and business keep on improving. Health, PE, and athletic has shown great improvement. PE at 76 %; Language Arts at 80%; Library Science at 100%; SOTA at 50%; Science and Math at 100%; and Social Science one class (History 3) away. As of the Feb, 3rd, Applied Tech is only 1 class (Bus 42) away from 100%. Overall, the College has assessed about 80% of Fall 2011 courses that needed to be assessed. It’s unfortunate when both sections are offered, only 1 faculty does the assessment and therefore, don’t get accounted for being “fully assessed” for that course. We need full participation from full-time faculty and work as a team in order to meet the 2012 deadline. Our goal is to go for 85 % or higher (proficiency level). Kent appreciated the work done by Christine. • Spring 2012 Assessment Needs & Guidelines: 2nd draft: “Courses Needing Assessment by Adjuncts in Spring 2012-Draft”: Last semester, we handed out Fall 2011 and Spring 2012 list of courses taught by adjuncts that needed assessment. This Spring, we are using Flex obligation to complete the assessment work. The adjunct is paid if they teach course/s that require assessment AND exceed 3CAH. Christine has been working with Trish and George on the role of adjuncts on the assessment of SLO’s. Christine will add a column about the adjunct who will be compensated by their work. This list is generated based on first Fall data. When asked about any information from Union, Robert informed that Dave is addressing the issue with Charlotte. George is in communication with the Adjunct Union. 3rd draft: “Courses Needing Assessment in Fall 2011 or Spring 2012 – Draft”: Fall 2011 courses that require assessment from all faculty. The SLOAC Reps should go to Rob for technical/ELUMEN issues. For other issues, go to Christine. • Spring 2012 Guidelines Assessment Policy and Guidelines is on the web. Christine forwarded the Guidelines to everybody in the committee. It needs to be updated because it was done in Sept. 2011 and a few things have change since then. Rob’s input is that some divisions have lots of sections, e.g., 31 sections. In that case, asking for 50% is too much. We can still get meaningful data with lesser sections. According to Rob, we should offer the exemptions to the rule under the following conditions: all the courses need to be taught in 1 semester. At least 5 sections need to be assessed. Kudos to the instructor who assessed all 31 sections. The min. number of instructors assessing must either be 4 or 66% of the total number of instructors for the course. At least 1 night class must be assessed if offered. This would be implemented Spring 2012. English and Math faculty will appreciate these efforts. The second amendment is that NO roll-over semesters. That will be applied in Fall 2012. CLO assessment data closing the loop is hard to print and explain. The form needs to be modified. There are cases when you can roll-over semester. Rob will have a report to let the faculty know what assessment is needed. If a class has 2-sections (2-sections in Fall and 2-sections in Spring), both sections in Fall assessed is considered completed. • Closing the Loop & SLO section of Program Review Forms. Christine is in conversation with Katherine Tollefesen since Ginger is temporarily out. These forms have not been modified yet (save & submit option). With Jennifer’s recommendation, these closing the loop forms (both blank and completed) will be uploaded on the web for everyone to see. (Unfortunately, unable to be upload the Word doc at this moment.) Concerns: Privacy. Everybody including students will have the access. Only one person teaching the course will be very apparent. What is the WASC policy? According to Christine, there is no definite wording about this in WASC. They only want it to be transparent. Christine passed on the WASC letter to committee members to review. How do we come up with the form for the adjuncts? Who voted on it. Who decided on this issue? Christine passed on the handout “Process for Meeting the Required” that Trish Shannon presented back in Fall 2011. The two questions were approved by the every committee, deans, and academics. 4. Announcements: Christine is moving out of California this semester and moving in to Arkansas due to her husband’s new job. She has spoken with Trish and will step down at the end of March this year. Full time faculty is encouraged to take over Christine’s responsibilities. She asked committee members if they are interested and to make recommendations. Meeting adjourned at 12:50pm.
