Institute of General Practice and Community Medicine Using computers on campus. • • • • All campus computers require a UiO username and password. Always log off when leaving a computer. You may restart/reset a computer at any time if necessary. Do not turn computers off. This is because we update computers at night. • Computers go into a “locked” mode if left without logging off. • Locked computers can be reset by either turning it off and on. – Hold the reset button for 6 seconds to turn off. • Do not install programs on the computers. Institute of General Practice and Community Medicine Active user account: • If not specifically told otherwise, you must keep your account active by ensuring that you – Pay your semester registration fees each semester. – Register for exams/courses each semester. • If you skip registering or paying one semester your account may become inactive shortly after the next semester. Institute of General Practice and Community Medicine The username gives access to: • Your university email account with up to 100MB storage of mail. • About 100 MB of personal disk space on a network disk (M:) • Access to many computers on campus. • Access to high speed network. • Access to wireless network for hom computers • University databases (such as medline.). • Printers. • Programs. Institute of General Practice and Community Medicine Your user account is personal • Do not give away your password to others. You are responsible for any misuse of your account. • If an account is seriously misused access privileges to the university account may be taken away. • Remember to log off when leaving a computer • Others may misuse your account, by for example using up your printer quota. Institute of General Practice and Community Medicine Changing your password. • You have all received a username and password. • For security reasons the University ask that you to change your password. • The password may be changed by going to the web page http://password.uio.no Institute of General Practice and Community Medicine Changing your password • It takes ½ to 4 hours before the new password is activated on all systems. • Wait until the new password is active before logging on to a campus computer again – A good time to change your password is just before you leave the computer for the day. – This will give the system all night to update the password on all systems. Institute of General Practice and Community Medicine What to use as a password. • To ensure that the password is secure. Only passwords that have at combination of letters digits and special characters (e.g. -,.:;&%) will be accepted. • Simple password with just letters will be rejected when you attempt to change the password. • The digits and special characters. must be in the middle of the password. • The password is changed through a web page inn internet explorer. Institute of General Practice and Community Medicine Email. • The standard email program for e-mail is http://webmail.uio.no. • You can access to this email from all over the world. • Use your university username and password to check your mail in web-mail. • Keep up-to-date by reading your university email. Institute of General Practice and Community Medicine Disk space: • All the campus computers will automatically connect your personal network disk to M: when you log on. • We advise to only save on the M: disk (not on the Hard Disk (C:) or (D:) ). • Documents saved on the C disk cannot be accessed on other computers. • Documents saved on the M: disk can be accessed through any computer on campus. • A backup of all documents on your M: disk is taken every night. • You can alternatively save on “USB memory keys”. • To avoid accidental loss of data we still advise you to keep extra copies (e.g. on the M: disk.) Institute of General Practice and Community Medicine The Network: • All campus computers have access to the university’s high speed network. • For security reasons it is not allowed to connect private computers on the University cabeled network . • IT is possible to connect private computers to the network through some campus resident flats, or through telphone line to UiO modems (22596790). – See http://www.usit.uio.no/it/hjemmekontor/english/index.html • It is possible to access personal disk and other resources from outside of the UIO network. • Some places on Campus offer wireless connections for privet computers. – Se http://www.usit.uio.no/it/wlan/peapforxp/ Institute of General Practice and Community Medicine Databases: • The university library offer access to a wide number of databases that can be accessed through the Web. • Many databases are restricted to university employees and students. • These databases can be accessed from all campus computers. • From private computers on external networks, databases can be accessed through a VPN connection – See http://www.usit.uio.no/it/hjemmekontor/english/vpn.html • Databases can be found in x-port see http://x-port.uio.no Institute of General Practice and Community Medicine Printers: • Computers in computer labs are automatically connect to ut_isam12. Institute of General Practice and Community Medicine Student printer quotas – An account of all pages printed is kept for each user – Printer resource are disabled for students who not to pay the optional “Copy fee” – Upon paying semester and copy fee students receive an initial quota of 250 pages. – Students can print so long as the quota is over zero. – Students can pay for more pages through the StudentWeb • See http://www.uio.no/english/academics/registration/ – The charge is kr 0,40 per one sided page. Institute of General Practice and Community Medicine Managing printer quota – You can check your printer account status through • https://www.uio.no/usit/cerebrumweb/utskrift – Additional pages can be paid for through the studentweb: • http://www.uio.no/english/academics/registration/ – You can print out so long as your printer account is in plus. – If your printout is larger than your quota the quota will go in minus. – Once your printer account is zero or in minus any subsequent printout will be aborted. – Contact us if you have any complaints about printout quality, we can restore pages to your printer account. Institute of General Practice and Community Medicine Payment for printouts – Additional pages can be paid for through the studentweb: • http://www.uio.no/english/academics/registration – You can choose to pay by “bankgiro”, net-bank or credit card – Paying by credit card will update your printer account immediately otherwise allow 4 to 5 days before your printer account will get updated. All printouts may appear later when the problem is resolved and you will be charged for all the printouts you order. This will typically be web links to word documents or PDF files on webpages • Sending attachments through the email – You may be asked to download and answerer a questionnaire in word and later return it as an attachment through the email. Institute of General Practice and Community Medicine Tips • Quit all programs before taking out a diskette or memory key. • Store documents directly on the network disk rather than directly on diskettes or memory key. • Use memory keys or diskettes for backup or transport only. • Always logs off when finished with a computer. • Take backup copies of important documents on private computer.
