Curriculum Committee January 28, 2014 DRAFT Members Present: Debbie Buti, Jane Church, Mireille Giovanola, Mary Ines (SSCC), Lynn Klein, Larry Leach, Wayne Pitcher, Kent Uchiyama, Patricia Wu Ex-Officio: Edna Danaher, Kaaren Krueg Guests: Kathy Kelley Prior to the meeting being convened, Kathy Kelley spoke about an apparent problem with the way Spanish 1A is aligned between the colleges. She would normally have brought this to the District Curriculum Committee, but it is apparently now known as the District Educational Committee, and is not dealing with much curriculum. Kathy asked the group for suggestions. Jane filled her in on the history of the way the colleges are presenting Spanish. She said that both colleges are teaching Spanish 1A and 1B as full semester courses, and are using the same textbook. However, LPCs 1A doesn’t cover as many chapters as Chabot’s does, so that students who took 1A at LPC are not prepared if they want to take 1B at Chabot. She sees it as a problem of alignment between the syllabus and the Course Outline of Record. Kathy will bring this up at Senate. 1. Call to Order A quorum having been achieved, the meeting was called to order at 2:30 by the chair, Wayne Pitcher. Wayne expressed surprise that Mireille was still attending. She explained that, since she has reviewed all the materials, she will remain on the committee until we have finished with last year’s proposals. Then William Hanson will take over as Social Sciences representative. Wayne also welcomed Kent Uchiyama back as Language Arts representative. 2. Minutes of December 10, 2013 MSC (Church/Giovanola) to approve the minutes of December 10, 2013, as presented. 3. Plan for course/program review Wayne distributed a summary list of courses left over from last fall. Kaaren reported that ARTH 8 has received state approval and should be removed from this list. Jane corrected FT 881 (it should read 88A) and removed PEAC FFT4. The two sequences are FT 88A, 88B, 88C, 88D and PEAC FFT, FFT1, FFT2, FFT3. 4. Possible discussion items Jane distributed the following list of curriculum proposals for consideration in Spring 2014: Articulation Officer to be given a vote on the Curriculum Committee Waiving the Wellness (AA/AS Area E) requirement for Veterans with DD214. (LPC does waive this and awards 3 units.) Approve to use CLEP/IB to satisfy the AA/AS GE requirement. (see pages 34-36 in Catalog) Proposal to allow a student who has a US BA/BS to have met the AA/AS and Grad GE. Curriculum Committee 1/28/13, Page 2 Wayne will agenda these for future meetings. 5. Good of the Order Jane will be revising the Liberal Arts AA to reflect curriculum changes made this year. Because the CurricuNET version of this degree is cumbersome, she would like to use the “old” paper process for the review. She will email the file to the committee. Jane also distributed a draft list of specific tasks of the division representative. There was discussion of how students and others can find course outlines without logging in. In order for this to work well, our CurricUNET setup is going to need some revisions. Wayne reported that it is going to be difficult for him to attend PRBC meetings this semester. Mireille attends PRBC and has volunteered to represent the Curriculum Committee as long as she remains a Curriculum Committee member. Wayne will need a different volunteer when William replaces Mireille. Wayne discussed the COOL and how its focus has changed since its inception. Jane asked “Where is the oversight?” There was discussion on the difficulties of “learning” Title 5. 6. kk 1/29/14 The meeting was adjourned at 3:53 PM Next meeting: February 4, 2014, in Room 2256. c:\documents\word\curric\2013-14\1-28-14.min.docx
