Justification:
Why is this position necessary?
Due to the complexity of coordinating and operating an off campus Fire Academy where resources
must be shared between the campus and the Alameda County Fire Training Center in San Leandro,
there is a great need to ensure that the Academy operates as smoothly as possible. There will be as
many as 15 different instructors teaching in the Fire Academy throughout the semester, so there is a
critical need for consistency in support of these instructors and the students. The Academy Logistics
Coordinator will be contacting each instructor in advance of their scheduled class segment(s) to
ensure that all apparatus, equipment and personnel resources to support the class will be there.
What educational programs or institutional purposes does this position support? How does the request
relate specifically to your Program Review, the College’s Strategic Plan, and/or Accreditation Recommendations?
The resource coordination is the critical element here. As of Fall 2016, seven courses will merge into
1, so there are many complications that can arise because of this merger. For the sake of the
students, the training sessions must be seemlessly coordinated and all instructors on the same page to
avoid conflicting information on concepts and procedures. Failure to ensure that resources are in
place will negatively impact the student's practice sessions and success. Since the new State
standard for skill performance passing score has changed from 80% to 100%, all students will need as
much practice as possible, with as much equipment as possible, to successfully meet the new
certification training standards. The logistical coordination will be essential for the future Fire Academy
to succeed.
Where will the individual work? To whom will the person report? Are there any special equipment/facilities needs
to be considered?
The Academy Logistics Coordinator will work with the Fire Technology Coordinator at Building 1500.
Both coordinators will likely be shuttling the resources to and from San Leandro if the Equipment
Technician positions are not approved. The Academy Logistics Coordinator will likely be a Fire
Academy instructor so that he or she is thoroughly familiar with the needs of the Academy.
What is the consequence of not funding this position?
As of Fall 2016, there will not be a place to keep Chabot Fire Engines parked at the San Leandro site,
so there will be a frequent need to shuttle vehicles and resources between Chabot and San Leandro even more than before. With this change, it will often take two people with valid Class B licenses to
move the Fire Engines each night and weekend. Also, to ensure consistency in instruction between
15 Academy instructors, and confirm that opoerational equipment is available to students each
session, there will be a great need to check in with instructors frequently to troubleshoot problems
before they occur. The estimated cost of this position breaks down to:

Coordinator
So far, the Fire Technology Coordinator has been the resource courier. However, this new issue of
apparatus parking next Fall is proving to be more challenging for one person to perform solo. If
sufficient resources are not provided on a "daily" basis, the students will not get the necessary practice
needed throughout the semester, thereby missing the 100% success requiremewnt to pass the
certification test.
How will the campus community (students, staff, faculty, and community) be positively impacted by filling this
position?
The more access and practice students have, the better their confidence in performance. Also, with
the Academy Logistics Coordinator handling the resource scheduling, the Fire Technology Coordinator
can return his focus on the Program Coordination
What other personnel currently provide support to this program and these students?
The Training (student) Assistants are providing the practice session oversight with on campus students
based on the resources we have on campus. Last minute requests to move equipment from San
Leandro to campus cannot always be honored by the Fire Technology Coordinator due to varying
obligations to meetings, etc.
