Chapter 16: Client Workstation Basics
Overview
This chapter discusses all of the information that is required to configure a network client to communicate on a
network. It addresses the installation of the adapters, clients, protocols, and services.
Teaching Suggestions
This is one of the more important chapters in the book as far as hands-on configuration. Each section of the
chapter discusses the hardware and software that is required in order for a client workstation to communicate on
a network. In addition, the configuration parameters are discussed in detail. There are also step-by-step
instructions provided for installing and configuring the majority of these components.
Since it is a “hands-on” chapter, I like to build a client workstation and then demonstrate the steps that are
necessary to install each adapter, client, protocol, and service. Once the demonstration is complete, I will often
give a graded assignment that covers the material in the chapter. For example, I’ll give a handout of
requirements and have the students install and configure the necessary software on the client computer.
Client configuration parameters and troubleshooting are a running theme throughout the test so the students
need a thorough understanding of this chapter.
Hardware and Software Requirements
Hands-on work requires a number of client computers and access to the operating system CDs. I recommend
using the Windows 2000 Professional operating system on each client system. The students will need access to
the operating system files for this exercise.
