Troubleshooting the Network
Perform on each router. (OSI layers' 1-3)
 Is there power?
o Check wires
o Is everything attached?
o Are the cables in good shape?
o Are they plugged into the correct port?
 Check link lights.
o Are they on?
o Are they active?
 Check local port status.
o show interface
 Is the port attached to something?
 Are they up?
 Is the line up?
 Is the protocol up?
 Are they administratively down?
 Should they be administratively down?
o Ping each interface
 Is it suppose to be administratively down?
 Is the IP address correct (in router script & ping)
 Is the IP subnet mask correctly set?
 Could the problem be on the other end of the wire?
Perform after verifying all ports on each router(OSI layers' 1-3)
 Check remote ports on each router from each router.
o Ping each interface
 Does the local end ping?
 Does the far end ping?
 Is it supposed to be administratively down?
 Is the IP address correct (in router script & ping)
o show ip route (To see routing table)
 Does network show up on table?
 Are all local networks included in router rip?
o Isolate problem connections and/or routers.
 Debug from both sides.
Telneting (OSI Layer's 1-7)
 Can you telnet to each IP address?
o Can you ping the address?
o Is the VTY correctly configured?
 Does it ask for a password?
 Can you telnet to each router name (from each router to each router)?
o Check the local ip host list
