Texas Tech Book History Club Meeting of March 8, 2016 President Joya Mannan called the meeting to order at 5:00 pm in E/P 359. President Mannan, Dr. Kvande, and Dr. Bauer (arriving shortly after the opening of the meeting) were present. New members Lydia Clinkscales from Sigma Tau Delta and Candice Merrill also attended. Mannan’s agenda included the Book Drive, Fundraising, and Events. Mannan opened the floor to old business. 1. Mannan informed the club that the paperwork for funding was approved, but funds ($800) won’t be available until the coming academic year. The club’s current bank balance is $100. 2. Fundraising Mannan recapped printing broadsides last semester for sale at Creative Writing events at $5/broadside. If the club wants to get together and print some new broadsides, a time can be arranged. Club members can become certified as an apprentice so that they can work independently in the LPS. Contact Dr. Bauer. The LPS is located in Room 307; hours are on the door. If members have ideas for prints, they can suggest ideas to the club. Kvande suggested creating a contest for club members to submit ideas for quotes. The prize will be a free broadside. Mannan will put together the contest. The square reader has arrived. Lydia mentioned at a later point in the meeting, that square readers cannot read chip cards and you will need to enter the numbers of the credit card in order to avoid a penalty. Journals from last semester are still available in the LPS. Mannan moved to new business. 1. Book Drive Mannan is planning on creating committees for the Book Drive. Mannan asked Lydia how much Sigma Tau Delta could contribute and Lydia reported that she could get about 5 people to participate; however, the 5 people do not have cars. Lydia felt that one box in Holden Hall will be the most doable for SigTD. o Mannan will contact Dr. Swingen in History to verify we can place a box in Holden Hall. Mannan will then put Lydia in contact with Dr. Swingen. Mannan reminded the club that once boxes become full, people can reach in and steal books. Thus, constant surveillance and emptying is recommended. At least three people are needed per box. Mannan reported on the options for the charity to which we would like to donate our books. o National Center for Family Literacy was decided upon. 2. 3. 4. 5. Flyer design was discussed. o Kvande suggested making the flyer less text-heavy: taking off the first sentence. Add Holden Hall to the flyer. Distribution of flyers was discussed: paper flyers, Twitter, Facebook, TechAnnounce. Dates for the Book Drive o Tentatively Monday, April 11- May 12. o Lydia mentioned that she will be gone before May 12, and SigTD will need to make some alternate arrangements during the last week. o Lydia mentioned we should have a box just for a few days for the Marathon Reading – April 1-2. The boxes from last year are torn, but Mannan will ask GES if we can have a box at the Marathon Reading. o Bauer suggested an email to the club to get more response on the charity selection and Book Drive dates. Mannan agreed. Special Collections Bruce Cammack has offered to put together a presentation. A Friday afternoon was suggested. Kvande mentioned that we should contact the club and give the club some options to choose from. Mannan will send out a doodle poll. Film Screening Mannan suggested screening Miss Potter. The Name of the Rose was also mentioned. Viewers can bring their own munchies. Lydia mentioned that SigTD has lots of candy left over, and it can be provided during the screening. There was a discussion as to whether the screening should be an evening showing or a brown bag lunch and discussion. Mannan will contact the club for a vote. A screening must be organized around film screenings for film classes. Thursday nights are not recommended either because of Creative Writing events. Bauer and Kvande suggested putting all the polls in one email with setting of high priority. Lydia suggested also putting the poll on Facebook. Broadsides at First Friday We can give broadsides to Vicki Bee who will sell them for the club. Bauer suggested making cards or postcards for sale for $1 or $2. Give a few sentences to let buyers know their money is supporting the club. A deadline for the club contest for designs should be the week before the event. End of Semester Event Some suggested ideas were 1) Book History open house/showcase or 2) linocut workshop or 3) Letterpress printing demo. Mannan was concerned there may not be enough material for a showcase. It was decided that a showcase should be delayed to next year. Bauer mentioned there was a chance for injury with a linocut workshop. The demo was decided upon. o Bauer suggested that attendees could browse the design stamps and insert a stamp into a pre-set chase. o Lydia suggested creating a “souvenir” for the club members that also serves as advertising for the club. o Mannan suggested connecting the quote contest idea with the demo. Everyone agreed. 6. Officer nominations The Communications Officer position is open. o Sarah Sprouse has expressed interest. The Treasurer position is open. Carly would like to train the upcoming Treasurer. Mannan will contact the club about the positions. 7. Open floor discussion Bauer brought up the 3-D printing workshop. There now appear to be some bureaucratic issues that cause printing times to be lengthy due to popularity of the printing press. The meeting adjourned at 5:55pm.
