ACS Special Awards at the Northeast
Ohio Science and Engineering Fair
By Michael Lienhard, ACS Judges Coordinator
for NEOSEF
The 2013 NEOSEF was held at John Carroll
University March 4–7, 2013. Over 600 students in
grades 7-12 participated in the fair. Ten volunteer
judges for the Cleveland section of the ACS
reviewed approximately 150 projects entered into
the Chemistry Category and selected the award
winners. During the judging session, students
were at their posters to discuss their projects and
interact with the Judges. The student winners and
their families have been invited to the April ACS
National Chemistry Week
By Bob Fowler
So how did you decide to become a scientist?
When you were a child did a particular someone
say or do something that made you think about a
technical career? How would you like to have the
same impact on a child?
One possible way is by giving of your time and
expertise. Our Cleveland Section is looking for
people who’d be interested in working with area
children through our National Chemistry Week
program. Each year we celebrate NCW in October
by staging hands-on chemistry demonstrations for
children in grades 2-6. If you can spare a few

hours between now and October to help design
this year’s program or if you’d prefer to assist in
conducting a demonstration in the Fall, please
drop Bob Fowler a line at jrfowler@cox.net. You
decide how much time and for how long.
