Shale Development and Ohio’s Chemical and Polymers
Sector
Douglas Southgate, The Ohio State University
Thanks to technological improvements, driven largely by market forces,
production of natural gas and other hydrocarbons from deep shale
formations and other unconventional deposits has increased substantially in
recent years. One result of this development has been to “decouple”
markets for petroleum and dry gas (i.e., methane) and prices of the latter
were below $3 per thousand cubic feet in early 2012. In response, drilling
in methane-rich deposits, including portions of the Marcellus play in
Pennsylvania, is falling off and drilling in Ohio’s Utica play, which appears
to be rich in crude oil and natural gas liquids (NGLs), is increasing. The
chemical industry and polymer firms in Ohio are expected to benefit as
energy and feedstock become more inexpensive, although expansion of this
sector of the state’s economy will also depend on inter-regional
competition for NGLs extracted from the Utica play as well as access to
national and international markets.

GAK Day Volunteers Needed
By Bob Fowler
The National Chemistry Week Planning
Committee is in need of volunteers to assist with
the assembly of demonstration kits for NCW.
If you have even an hour to spare, please
consider coming to GAK (Grand Assembly of
Kits) Day on Saturday, September 15, 2012 from
8:30 AM until finished in room W318 of the
Dolan Science Center at John Carroll University.
No one will be asked how to balance redox
equations or anything technical, and we’re a
friendly bunch! We’ll have snacks available all
day, and we’ll serve our famous pizza lunch
around noon. We need all the hands we can get,
so we hope to see you there on the 15th. Please
email Bob Fowler at jrfowler@cox.net with any
questions.
