In order to identify these students, a preliminary, local Chemistry Olympiad will be conducted. The local exam will be administered at Cleveland State University on Saturday March 16. More than 100 students from local high schools are expected to compete. Based on the results from the local competition, the top eleven students, with a maximum of two from the same school, will have the privilege of taking the National Chemistry Olympiad Examination and Practical. The National Exam is an-all day event that includes two exams and a lab practical. The national exam will be administered on Friday, April 12, 2013 at Cleveland State University. Following the National Exam and Practical, twenty students from the U.S. will be selected to attend a two-week training camp at the U.S. Air Force Academy to prepare for the international competition. Based on performance at the camp, four students will be selected to represent the United States in the 45th Chemistry Olympiad in Moscow, Russia, July 15 - 24, 2013. Cindy Zhao from Brecksville-Broadview High School and Stephen Tang from Solon High School were 2 of the twenty students selected nationally to attend the two-week training camp at the U.S. Air Force Academy in last year’s competition. Anne O’Connor, Ph.D. ACS Chemistry Olympiad Coordinator Email: a.oconnor@csuohio.edu Website: http://www.pathwaystochemistry .com/chemistry-olympiad/ By Anne O’Connor We are pleased to announce that the Cleveland Section of The American Chemical Society will be participating in the 2013 U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO). The primary goals of this program are to stimulate interest and achievement in chemistry among high school students and to provide recognition of outstanding young chemistry students, teachers, and schools. Selected from ACS Discoveries! First mobile app for green chemistry fosters sustainable manufacturing of medicines ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering Mention mobile applications, or mobile apps, and people think of games, email, news, weather, productivity and other software for Apple, Android and other smart phones and tablet Page 3 Isotopics Mar 2013 computers. But an app with broader impact — the first mobile application to foster wider use of the environmentally friendly and sustainable principles of green chemistry — is the topic of a report in the American Chemical Society’s new journal, ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering. Sean Ekins, Alex M. Clark and Antony Williams point out that the companies that manufacture medicines, electronics components and hundreds of other consumer products have a commitment to work in a sustainable fashion without damaging the environment. That’s the heart of ―green chemistry,‖ often defined as ―the utilization of a set of principles that reduces or eliminates the use or generation of hazardous substances in the design, manufacture and application of chemical products.‖ Their article describes a guide on doing so for solvents, key ingredients in processes for making medicines. Some traditional processes generate 25-100 times more waste than the chemical they are making (e.g., pharmaceuticals). The solvents guide was developed by the ACS Green Chemistry Institute’s Pharmaceutical Roundtable, a group of 14 pharmaceutical companies, and the Green Solvents mobile app version of the guide for Apple devices covers 60 different solvents. Nominations for the 2013 Yeager Award are now being accepted. The Ernest B. Yeager Award was established for the purpose of encouraging interest at the undergraduate level in spectroscopy and analytical chemistry. It is presented annually to an outstanding undergraduate student attending a college or university in Northern Ohio or Northwestern Pennsylvania who has demonstrated an interest in some aspect of spectroscopy. The award consists of a certificate, $300 cash, and a one year complementary membership in the Society for Applied Spectroscopy. The award is sponsored jointly by the Society for Applied Spectroscopy (SAS) and the Analytical Topics group of the American Chemical Society (ACS). American Chemical Society Cleveland Section The presentation of the Yeager Award will be made at the at the 57th Annual May Conference on Spectroscopy and Analytical Chemistry, to be held at the Dolan Science Center at John Carroll University on Wednesday, May 15, 2013. The award recipient will be required to present a 20 minute synopsis of his/her work and will be recognized at the evening banquet. Letters of nomination, supporting materials and any questions should be addressed to: Douglas E. Rohde 440-350-5950 Lake County Crime Laboratory drohde@lakecountyohio.gov 235 Fairgrounds Road Painesville, OH 44077 and must arrive no later than March 25, 2013 at which time the nomination documents will be forwarded to the Yeager Award judging panel.
