 Statute 6.1 – Awards of the University Made by the Monash University Council Version incorporating amendments as at 17 February 2012 1. Definitions In this statute and any regulations made hereunder, unless the contrary intention appears ‐ 'award' means a diploma, certificate or other award of the university; 'course of study' means a number of units of study extending over a period of time undertaken towards a degree or award and 'course' has a corresponding meaning; 'degree' means a degree of the university. 2. Awards of the University 2.1 In accordance with the Act and this statute, the Council may confer a degree or grant an award to any person. Degrees and awards shall be evidenced by a certificate, in such form as approved by Council from time to time. 2.2 The Council may revoke any degree conferred or award granted, in accordance with the regulations. 2.3 The Council may make regulations for or with respect to ‐ 2.3.1 the requirements and restrictions on the enrolment and re‐enrolment of students; and 2.3.2 the revocation of degrees and awards. 2.4 The Courses and Degrees (General) Regulations shall be taken to have been made by the Council under this statute. 2.5 The Candidate Progress Management Regulations made by Council shall be taken to have been made under this statute and may hereafter be amended and revoked by the Academic Board in accordance with subsection 2.6. 2.6 The Academic Board may make regulations for or with respect to ‐ 2.6.1 the degrees that may be conferred and the awards that may be granted by the Council; 2.6.2 the requirements of a course of study, including but not limited to the units and work comprising a course of study and any related matter or thing; and Statute 6.1 – Awards of the University 2.6.3 the confirmation and termination of candidature for higher degree by research students. 3. Transitional Provision On and from the commencement of Statute 6.1.2 ‐ Courses and Degrees (Amendment) (No. 1 of 2011), in any statute (other than this statute), regulation or any other document of any kind, unless the context otherwise requires, a reference to Statute 6.1.2 ‐ Courses and Degrees shall be construed as a reference to Statute 6.1 ‐ Awards of the University.
