Curricular Reform
A document created by the university PLUS (Progressive Learning in Undergraduate
Studies) Task Force was distributed to the committee. The goal of the task force is to
complete a progressive undergraduate curricular revision plan by September 2014, and
they are seeking feedback to their plan by May 1 about how to make the proposed
changes stronger.
Assessment Updates:
CBK Technology; Oral
Bus Communication
A. Buhrow gave an assessment update on the common business knowledge – technology
goal and on the oral business communication goal.
Relative to the CBK – technology goal, in Fall 2013 faculty members teaching ACCY
310A and OMIS 351 embedded the same 6 exam questions to measure achievement of
the primary traits covered by this learning objective which states: College of Business
graduates will be able to identify the role and impact of information technology on
organizations to support competitive advantage. 94.96% of students met or exceeded
expectations (students answered 4 or more questions correctly), the target being 75%.
The Curriculum Committee voted to accept the A-Team recommendations as follows:
The CBK – technology learning objective will be reviewed prior to the next data
collection cycle. If the learning objective remains the same, (1) review embedded
questions to ensure alignment with the learning objective, and (2) request professor
provide the statistical reports from testing services so the question discrimination
indices can be reviewed.
Relative to the oral business communication goal, faculty teaching UBUS 311 assess
students’ individual presentation abilities as part of a group presentation using a custom
rubric for grading and individual assessment purposes. 99.84 % of students over the latest
3-year period met or exceeded expectations overall and in each primary trait area, the
target being 75%. The Curriculum Committee voted to accept the A-Team
recommendation as follows:
The oral business communication learning objective will be reviewed prior to the
next data collection cycle. If the learning objective remains the same, engage alumni
and external faculty, possibly those teaching COMS 100, to assess student oral
business communications skills using the UBUS 311 rubric in spring 2015.
The Assurance of Learning Team will be invited to attend the April 22 College
Curriculum Committee meeting to begin a review of the learning goals and objectives of
the undergraduate business degree program.
