Department of Accountancy Other Catalog Change Page 76, 2014-15 Undergraduate Catalog Department Requirements Retention in the accountancy program is competitive based on a student’s overall GPA for 60 semester hours and grades earned in ACCY 206 and ACCY 207 or equivalent courses. … Rationale: The department’s goal is the use of a student’s overall GPA, not just a 60-semester hour GPA, for retention purposes. Students may have more than 60 semester hours of credit at the beginning of their junior year. This language prevents those students from petitioning for the use of their best 60 hours, and not their total number of hours, for retention in the program. Admission to the Master of Accounting Science program is competitive. COLLEGE OF BUSINESS Curriculum Committee October 7, 2014 Page 2 of 4 2014-15 #3 Candidates may also be asked by the department graduate adviser to complete an interview either in person or by phone. ↓ Rationale: This change provides the department increased admissions flexibility for its graduate program. Absent the proposed change, any student with a minimum 3.00 GPA would be eligible for admission. This would strain department resources if a large number of 3.00 GPA or higher applicants applied for admission in any given year. The Accountancy Department communicates its graduate admission standards, deadlines, documentation requirements and application instructions to students on its website (http://www.cob.niu.edu/accyLMAS/admissioncriteria.asp). In addition, the department provides web links and contact information for graduate advisers (both via e-mail and telephone) for students who have questions related to graduate admission requirements. Course requirements revision: The OMIS Executive Advisory Council recommended our students take more courses covering specific operations management and information systems content that will benefit our students in their career success. This curricular change will facilitate this recommendation by making room for an additional upperdivision OMIS elective course. The department curriculum committee believes business communications in oral and written form is essential for student success. With many students taking MGMT 346 their final semester, the department has adjusted course curriculum in recent years to assure students are taught the skills necessary to communicate effectively. In addition this proposal supports the proposed university writing requirement known as PLUS, where each department will be asked to designate two upper-level courses with a major writing component. Our department has already addressed this matter by targeting OMIS 442, Process and Quality Improvement, and OMIS, 498 Business Analysis Capstone, as the designated courses. Note: The courses listed for the Business Process Analysis area of study were approved by the College of Business Curriculum Committee at its Second Meeting, September 23, 2014.
