The need for a redefinition





Especially on behalf of church
- in relation to school – more or less secular and multireligious
institution
- in relation to society
Why different tasks? How different?
Why still so similar view on the ’educational’ task?


Historical, academic, educational, structural reasons?
(school rooted in church, didactics rooted in catechesis, higher
education within the same institutions and so on)

The synagogue

the local congregation
Mainly for rites of passage, big
celebrations, and cultural
events

for cultural and ethical reasons

Jesus as an ethical ideal


Synagogue
Continuous teaching –for the
few
Church has new role as school changes




Today?
Main responsibility together
with the family for the individual
religious upbringing for children
living in an informed
multireligious society.

Temple
In past: School made use of
church to celebrate shifts in its
own rhythm: end of winter and
summer semester for all pupils.
Today?
Celebrations of the Church’s own
festivals as an offer to see religion
in function. Children take part on
different conditions: some
celebrate, some are informed,
some observe or they opt out from
this.
Church as place for visit to be
informed – part of the ordinary
educational program for all pupils.
Teacher sets the rules.

Synagogue
In past: School and church
operated within the same
paradigm: Christian worldview
Church had a mainly
supplementary role
