UNDERGRADUATE AUDITION REQUIREMENTS Classical Guitar The classical guitar audition should consist of at least three works from different periods (baroque, classical, romantic, contemporary). A classical étude or a transcription from the Baroque or the Renaissance lute literature is acceptable. Performance majors should prepare music from a multi-­‐
movement sonata or suite. Candidates will be asked to play some major and minor scales and to demonstrate rudimentary sight-­‐reading skills. Jazz Guitar For the guitar audition, the candidate should prepare a chord-­‐
melody arrangement based on a standard tune (e.g., Misty, All the Things You Are, Bye-­‐Bye Blackbird, etc.). However, an original composition for guitar would be acceptable. Candidates should demonstrate familiarity with major scales, minor pentatonic scales and the “blues” scale. Knowledge of basic major and minor scales is expected. Students will be asked to demonstrate rudimentary sight-­‐reading skills. Harp Harp applicants should contact applied instructor Jody Guinn (jguinn4277@aol.com) to discuss audition requirements. Keyboard Repertoire for keyboard auditions should include at least three contrasting works from different periods (baroque, classical, romantic, and contemporary). For performance majors, it is expected that the works be played by memory. For others, at least one must be memorized. You may be asked to sight-­‐read. Percussion Percussion applicants should contact percussion area coordinators Bruce Golden (b.golden@csuohio.edu) to confirm audition repertoire. The audition should consist of a variety of works demonstrating the candidate’s ability on snare drum, a mallet instrument, and timpani. You may be asked to sight-­‐
read. Strings 2 contrasting works, such as an outer movement of a concerto and another solo work, showing a variety of bow strokes, shifting to various positions, vibrato and musicality. 2 contrasting 3 octave scales, one major and one minor Voice Voice candidates are expected to perform two pieces in contrasting styles. Performance majors should prepare least one song or aria in a language other than English. Candidates will also be asked to vocalize, and will be given some tonal memory and musicianship exercises to determine vocal range and ear. An accompanist will be provided. Woodwinds The audition should consist of two pieces in contrasting styles and tempi that best demonstrate the candidate’s present ability. Piano accompaniment is not necessary. You may be asked to sight-­‐read. Brass – Required Repertoire 1. A standard concerto or solo piece. 2. 2 études in contrasting styles (e.g., lyrical and technical, or 1 etude and 1 additional solo) 3. At least 3 standard orchestral excerpts in contrasting styles 4. Sight-­‐reading may be asked 5. Scales and Arpeggios may be asked. *All applicants must provide 2 recommendation letters. For Performance Majors these letters must be from their current instructor. Recommendation letters will be in the applicant's folder at time of their audition. Composition Candidates for the concentration in composition are required to demonstrate proficiency on their primary instrument. Performance level must be adequate for participation in a major ensemble. Candidates must also meet with area coordinator Andrew Rindfleisch (a.rindfleisch@csuohio.edu) for approval. Bachelor of Arts in Music/Pop & Rock (*Additional requirements for BA Percussion) Students will prepare material – up to 5-­‐10 minutes in duration on the instrument they feel demonstrates their playing ability most fully. This may be in any musical style or genre. Students will be asked to play some basic material at the examiners discretion. This may include major or minor scales, common chord types, or simple rhythmic patterns or beat types. The student will then be assessed as to their abilities reading written material, this may include standard notation, tablature, or lead sheet formats. Abilities in this area are not necessarily required for admission if the examiners feel there is obvious ability and desire to learn, however it is an advantage. Students will take a basic music theory exam to establish where their placement should be in terms of whether they are prepared to begin the harmony and form sequence or whether more preparatory work is required in this area. *Repertoire Requirements for Drum set/Percussion Audition (BA Pop & Rock Only) “Whole Lotta Love” – Led Zeppelin, Two variations in Funk Style, shuffle pattern to “Rosanna” by Toto.
