Upcoming Hazardous Fuel and Vegetation Treatment Workshop
Region 6 Forest Supervisors
REPLY DUE APRIL 28, 2004
A workshop is being sponsored by PNW Research Station May 17-18, 2004, in Bend, Oregon to
share current applications and tools for fuel and vegetation treatments and promote discussions
between scientists, managers and resource specialists regarding fuel treatments at the stand and
landscape scale. This workshop is in direct response to requests by several Forest Supervisors
for assistance in planning and implementing effective hazardous fuels and other vegetation
treatments. The location is The Inn of the Seventh Mountain.
The objectives of this workshop are to:
•
Provide an overview and synthesis of currently available (or soon to be available)
models, tools and applications for hazardous fuel and vegetation treatment.
•
Promote interaction and discussion between scientists and managers on the key issues
and barriers land managers face in planning and implementing fuel and vegetation
treatments.
•
Discuss short-term and long-term needs and priorities of managers and identify
opportunities for science to assist.
We encourage and invite your participation in this workshop. The target audience for the
workshop is fuel treatment specialists, vegetation management specialists, planners, and line
officers. We understand that the timing of this workshop may be problematic for some Forests,
but we hope to hold another session in the fall. Participation in the workshop will be limited to
two or three people per Forest, in an effort to keep the meeting manageable. Please let Jewell
Reid (503-808-2103; jreid01@fs.fed.us) know by April 28, 2004, who will be attending the
workshop from your office.
Attachment A describes the proposed agenda for the workshop. The session is intended to be a
two-way communication between scientists, managers and resource specialists. Outcomes from
this workshop will include the completion of a workshop synthesis manuscript documenting key
models, tools and applications for hazardous fuel and vegetation treatment; short-term and longterm research needs of managers for prioritizing and planning fuel treatments; and a summary of
agreements and future interactions from the workshop.
