Office: JWB 219
Office Hours: Monday 10:30-11:30 a.m., or by appointment.

Course Meeting Times: MWF 9:40-10:30, JWB 208
Text: Mathematical Applications for the Management, Life, and Social Sciences, 8th Edition, by Harshbarger and Reynolds
Prerequisites: A grade of C or better in MATH 1050 OR MATH 1090. This course fulfills
Quantitative Reasoning (Math & Stat/Logic).
Course Topics: Differentiation, maximization and minimization of functions, marginal
analysis and the optimization of constrained functions, integration and applications.
Homework: Homework will be assigned for each lecture and collected during the following
lecture. Selected problems will be graded from each assignment. If these problems are missing or incomplete, credit will not be given for other completed exercises. Your work should be
organized and legible. I encourage you to work with others on the homework. However, each
student must independently write up and submit his or her own solutions for the assignment.
Solutions to graded problems will be posted following the class in which the assignment is
due. No late homework will be accepted.
Attendance: Class attendance and participation is vital to your success in any math course.
As such, opportunities for class participation will be provided and will count towards your
final grade.
Exams & Quizzes: There will be three midterm exams and one final exam. The midterm
exams will take place during class on September 23, October 28, and November 23. The
final exam will be held on Monday, December 12, from 8:00-10:00 a.m in JWB 208. In-class
quizzes will be given on Fridays, except during weeks when there is an exam. Quiz questions
1
will be taken directly from homework and in-class examples.
If you have a conflict and must make up a midterm exam, you must notify the instructor
prior to start of the exam (i.e. before 9:40 a.m. on the day of the exam). After this deadline,
make-ups will not be given. You may be asked to provide documentation of the circumstances that prevented you from taking the exam (e.g. doctor’s note, etc.). No make-ups
will be allowed for quizzes. If you require testing accommodations, you must contact the
instructor at the beginning of the course to make these arrangements.
Grading: Your grade will be computed as follows:
• 60% - The average of your three midterm exam scores. Your cumulative quiz score
may substitute for one of these exams.
• 30% - Final exam
• 10% - Homework & Class Participation
A letter grade will be assigned according to the University grading policy (find it here:
http://www.sa.utah.edu/regist/handbook/grading.htm) and the standard division of grades.
Calculator Policy: You will be allowed to use a scientific calculator on exams & quizzes.
Classroom Policies: In order to ensure an environment conducive to learning, the following
policies will be enforced:
• No computers will be allowed in class.
• Cell phones must be turned off or on silent during class.
• If you behave disruptively or inhibit the class’s learning, you may be asked to leave
the classroom for the remainder of the lecture.
Other Resources: The T. Benny Rushing Mathematics Student Center (adjacent to JWB
& LCB), Rm 155 is open M - Th 8 a.m. - 8 p.m., F 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. Free drop-in tutoring
is available there. You may also contact a private tutor from the Math department list
(available in JWB 233) if you require additional help.
ADA: The American with Disabilities Act requires reasonable accommodations be provided
for students with physical, cognitive, systemic, learning, and psychiatric disabilities. Please
contact me at the beginning of the semester to discuss any such accommodations for this
course.
**A note on email: I do not check my email once I leave my office for the day. Please allow
