Plant Science Building. The
sculpture, called “Rain Stones,” is
made from Texas sandstone and
incorporates bronze elements. It is
described as an interactive
experience designed to integrate

Texas Tech’s continued commitment to agricultural education and research took another step forward
on Oct. 30 with the opening of the new Bayer Plant Science Building. Thanks to Bayer CropScience, a
major partner in funding agricultural initiatives both in Lubbock and within the College of Agricultural
Sciences and Natural Resources, the Bayer Plant Science Building will provide students with a state-ofthe-art facility to learn and conduct research, as well as collaborate on projects with fellow students.

Researchers find patches of heavy metals along Colorado, New Mexico
river
CASNR’s David Weindorf found scattered accumulations of heavy metals along a 60mile stretch of riverbank in Colorado and New Mexico a month after the Gold King
Mine wastewater spill and that any potential threat to crops and livestock should be
studied further. “There’s a risk those metals could work their way into our food chain
or the food chain for animals,” he said. more »
Texas Tech Meat Judging Team captures crown at American Royal
contest
Texas Tech’s Meat Judging team continued its strong showing this fall by taking first
place at the American Royal Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest in Omaha, Neb. Tech
captured the win by just three points over the University of Wyoming, 4,098-4,095. The
Red Raiders took first place in team judging in three categories – overall beef, beef
judging and beef grading. more »

Strong Start; Texas Tech meat, livestock judging teams open fall with
victories
The Texas Tech meat and livestock judging teams in the College of Agricultural Sciences
and Natural Resources opened the fall competition season with a pair of victories,
including the State Fair of Texas judging contest. The meat judging team captured first
place at the American Meat Sciences Association Eastern National Intercollegiate Meat

CASNR grad Christopher Hoffman named President-Elect of CLARB
Board
A graduate of Tech’s Department of Landscape Architecture has been named
president-elect of the Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Board of
Directors, officials of the Reston, Va.-based organization report. Christopher Hoffman
received a bachelor of landscape architecture from Tech in 1988. He is founder of
Christopher B. Hoffman Landscape Architect in Clinton, Miss. more »

parent
Courtney Meyers, an associate professor of agricultural communications, is all too
familiar with the trials and tribulations that come with being a working parent.
Courtney and her husband Daniel have two daughters, Isabel, 7, and Amelia, 4, and are
embarking on the parenting adventure in a less traditional way: with Courtney working
full-time while Daniel is a stay-at-home dad. more »
TTU Equestrian Programs Endowment receives matching gift
opportunity
Officials with Texas Tech’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources
announced this month that anonymous donors have agreed to fund the equestrian
programs of Tech’s Department of Animal and Food Sciences with a commitment to
match gifts made by third-party donors in support of the endowment of programs
housed within the Tech’s Equestrian Center. more »

Hall of Fame: AFS leaders honor outstanding alumni, special
contributors
Texas Tech’s Department of Animal and Food Sciences highlighted its outstanding
alumni and special contributors on Oct. 9 at a special 250-person event held in the
department’s livestock arena. Ten award winners were honored as well as members of
the 1985, 1995 and 2005 Meat Judging Teams and the 2010 Wool Judging Team. more

Texas Beef Council’s new documentary ‘Raising the Best’ has CASNR
ties
Misty Martin, Ag Communications Manager with the Texas Beef Council, reports that
the R.A. Brown Ranch is featured in a new documentary-style video titled “Raising the
Best: It’s in the Genes” on its consumer website, TxBeef.org. The Throckmorton-based Browns have
long, close ties to Texas Tech and particularly to Tech’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural
