‘Aggie of the Month’
Texas Tech’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources honored three Texas residents with
Gerald W. Thomas Outstanding Agriculturalist Awards on Nov. 10 during its 88th annual Pig Roast at
the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center Exhibit Hall. The Pig Roast also celebrates scholarship donors,
recipients and intercollegiate judging teams. more »
Tech’s Meat Judging Team captures 12th national championship in
Nebraska
Texas Tech’s meat judging team is back on top. On the strength of having the top two
individual finishes, the meat judging team captured its 12th national championship at
the International Meat Judging Contest on Nov. 15 in Dakota City, Nebraska. It’s the
fourth national championship in the last five years for Tech, which topped the
University of Wyoming by 21 points to claim the title. more »
Texas Tech Livestock Judging Team claims eighth national
championship
For the fourth time in school history, Texas Tech has swept two national championship
judging competitions. Two days after the meat judging team claimed the crown, the
livestock judging team followed suit, outlasting Oklahoma State by 15 points to earn
the program’s eighth national title and first since 2011 at the North American
International Livestock Exposition in Louisville. more »
Service Honored: Peffley named to Plant & Soil Science Faculty Hall of
Fame
Noted plant breeder and researcher Ellen Peffley has been named to Tech’s
Department of Plant and Soil Science Faculty Hall of Fame. A reception honoring
Peffley was held last month as part of the ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house
activities surrounding CASNR’s new Bayer Plant Science Building. She is the sixth faculty
hall of fame member to be added to the distinguished group. more »

Innovation; CASNR’s Advising Academy completes first round of
training
Eleven members of CASNR were honored last month as the inaugural class of the
CASNR Advising Academy. Representing the college’s six departments, the participants
focused on a series of workshops that ultimately aim to provide more consistency
between programs, give faculty and staff more confidence when advising students, and
create a more efficient advising process.
Yang Hu takes new post with Tech’s Department of Plant and Soil
Science
Yang Hu, an expert in agricultural and biological engineering, has been named a
research assistant professor in renewable bioproducts with Tech’s Department of Plant
and Soil Science. He steps into his new post on Dec. 1. He will be based at Tech’s Fiber
and Biopolymer Research Institute, a 110,000-square-foot research and testing facility
located six miles east of the main campus. more »
Texas Tech Ranch Horse Team captures crown at Western Horseman
Show
Tech’s Ranch Horse Team captured the Collegiate World Championship and several
members of the team recently captured top individual honors at the Western
Horseman Stock Horse World Show in Abilene. Competing against 10 other collegiate
teams, Texas Tech earned top honors in several divisions, including stock horse
pleasure, trail, reining and cow horse categories. more »
Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics adds Donna
Mitchell
Donna Mitchell has been named a research assistant professor in water and resource
economics with Tech’s Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics. She stepped
into her new post on Nov. 1. The Lamesa native indicated that she is interested in
continuing her research efforts on water and resource policy, water conservation,
sustainability, food security, and climate change. more »
In Profile: Food tech graduate Edgar Sotelo shines in western art world
Six-years-old and pencil in hand, Edgar Sotelo knew from a young age he had a passion
for art. Closely watching his father work on the ranch day in and day out, Sotelo gained
a deep appreciation for western art. “Once you do any kind of art, whether it is writing
songs or painting, and you choose western theme as the subject matter, you can really
live your passion through your medium.” more »
Department of Animal & Food Sciences launches ‘Meat School in
Spanish’
As Latin American countries are becoming leading players in the meat and poultry
market, Texas Tech is taking a big step toward providing valuable insight to those
individuals about how the industry works in the United States. As part of that effort,
Tech’s Department of Animal and Food Sciences hosted its first ‘Meat School in
Spanish’ in October. more »
