Texas Tech University System officials have announced plans to develop a veterinary school and
veterinary medicine doctoral program in response to student demand and industry needs. CASNR and
the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center are utilizing established strengths to develop a
program that provides important animal health solutions and veterinarians to address the unique
agricultural challenges facing this region and state. “Being in West Texas where most of the state’s and
nation’s livestock are concentrated, we understand the importance of veterinary medicine and see the
industry’s needs first-hand,” said CASNR Dean Michael Galyean. more »

Pollinator Conservation; Researchers look to get bee populations
buzzing
In the wake of colony collapse disorder, bee populations have seen dramatic losses in
recent years. But a team of Tech researchers is working on a project to help farmers
boost the health of their pollinator pals. “Beneficial insects, including pollinators, are
an important component of sustainable agroecosystems,” said Scott Longing, an
assistant professor in the Department of Plant and Soil Science. more »

TCFWRU researchers lead study on impact of public access areas on
rivers
Little data exists on how much those public access points are used and how much that
access affects the water and wildlife both within the stream and habitat along the
banks. Tim Grabowski, assistant unit leader for fisheries at the Texas Cooperative Fish
and Wildlife Research Unit, hopes to quantify those effects with the goal of opening up
even more public access areas across the state. more »
Year of Soils; Success of Tech’s soils judging teams built over time,
tradition
During the 1960s and 1970s, a team on the Tech’s campus routinely vied for national
championships; not on the football field but in the soil judging pit. Indeed, Red Raider
teams were some of the most respected in the nation. This legacy is in large part due
to the leadership of one man, B. L. Allen. Nationally, his teams place first five times and
second, third or fourth an additional seven times. more »
