clothing representing their culture. The student center was decorated
colorfully. The event was very fun.
VALEDICTORIAN AND DELINQUENTS
The event Valedictorian and Delinquents held on February 27 was a huge success. It was
well received by the audience. There were approximately 40 participants from faculty to the
community members, including high school children. We would like to express our sincerest
thank-you to the presenters and the participants. The entire presentation, but mostly the Q
and A session was very informative and interesting. We will be hosting more of these
events. If you are a graduate student and have anything interesting that you’d like to
present, please contact us at graduategrant@csuohio.edu.

Kathy Dobda, CSU Michael Schwartz Library
Invites Grads to the Library
Ms. Kathy Dobda is the Assistant Director of Public Services at Michael Schwartz Library,
Cleveland State University. MSL is partnering with GGWC and GSA (Graduate Student
Association) to support CSU graduate students and to make available to grads the various
programs in the reference department, and Kathy Dobda is very interested in your
participation in Library programs. The library offers many beneficial programs to students
including (1) a review of research databases, (2) assistance and advice on how to use
databases for assignments and research, and (3) along with the help that is available on the
MSL website.
Ms. Dobda is focused on creating information literacy, which basically means finding,
evaluating, and using information per the needs of the students. CSU grad students are
invited to talk to the MSL librarians on a one-to-one basis about questions they may have
and how the librarians can help to solve them. On or off campus, grads can call, e-mail, or
schedule an appointment via the online calendar to meet up with the personal librarian MSL
librarians are available 9AM to 6PM daily for meetings. The library put more emphasis on
the concept of personal librarian was beginning this past August, and the effort has paid off
as enrollment in the program is picking up and more students are using the services.
Included in the reference programs are training sessions covering Refworks, journal impact
factors, and also update sessions to inform that students when there is an update or change
in the existing resources. In addition to the grad student services, MSL Reference offers
training to the faculty two – three times each semester. MSL librarians also visit the various
colleges and departments to train faculty, and students in library programs and procedures.
Contact your respective librarian for more information and to schedule such visits.
Ms. Dobda received her Master in Library Science from the University of Pittsburgh (1974).
During a career that spans 40 years, she has worked at many small private colleges and
was the head of Reference and Instruction at the Dawes Library, Marietta College. She was
for some time a public librarian but became an academic library and has stayed as academic
librarian because she felt it added more value to where she was serving. Ms. Dobda says
that as a CSU librarian she faces situations that are different from her prior academic library
experiences. In her earlier career, she got to know students on a more personal level than
is possible at CSU because of the large student body at CSU. In addition, she believes that
there is a lot more to be done to create awareness of the availability of resources at CSU
2
library. She encourages students to come to the library and use the resources which they
have paid for as those resources are tailored to research and study needs and offer much
quicker responses than a common search Internet search engine. Ms. Dobda is very
interested in engaging grad students in the Personal Librarian program because she believes
that graduate students respond more positively to one-to-one meetings which provide a
more personal and a mentored aspect to research and reference work.
On April 2 and April 9 Ms. Dobda will be teaching two GGWC workshops. Her topic is
Effective and Efficient Searching Techniques Using Databases and Other Sources. Both
classes will meet at 5:30PM – 7:00PM in the MSL Computer Lab Back, on the first floor of
the library. To register, visit http://www.csuohio.edu/research/ggwc/calendar/index.html
and scroll down to the April calendar and click on the work Register on the date of your
choice.
Mozilla Foundation Launches Open Badges
Announcement: http://openbadges.org/
Badges: https://badges.webmaker.org/
For the past two years, Mozilla Foundation has been working with the MacArthur Foundation
to develop an online system to recognize and verify learning of digital literacy skills and
specifically webmaker skills. That system – Open Badges - was launched this week by
Mozilla Foundation. This information is taken from Mozilla Foundation’s ―About‖ Open
Badges information page:
Open Badges is a new online standard to recognize and verify learning. A digital badge is
an online representation of a skill you’ve earned. Open Badges takes that concept one step
further, and allows you to verify your skills, interests and achievements through a credible
organization. And because the system is based on an open standard, you can combine
multiple badges from different issuers to tell the complete story of your achievements —
both online and off. Display your badges wherever you want them on the web, and share
them for employment, education or lifelong learning.
 Mozilla Open Badges is not proprietary — it’s free software and an open
technical standard. That means any organization can create, issue and verify
digital badges, and any user can earn, manage and display these badges all across
the web.
 Open Badges knits your skills together. Whether they’re issued by one
organization or many, badges can build upon each other, joining together to tell the
full story of your skills and achievement.
 With Open Badges, every badge is full of information. Each one has important
data built in that links back to the issuer, the criteria it was issued under and
evidence verifying the credential — a feature unique to Open Badges.
 Open Badges lets you take your badges everywhere. Users now have an easy
and comprehensive way to collect their badges in a single backpack, and display
their skills and achievements on social networking profiles, job sites, their websites
and more.
 Individuals can earn badges from multiple sources, both online and offline.
Once earned you can manage and share them using the Open Badges backpack.
To fully develop this credentialing system, Mozilla worked with over 600 leading
organizations (http://openbadges.org/community) which are now using Open Badges to
issue credentials that count toward education, careers and lifelong learning. Mozilla and its
Open Badge community members believe that this effort will "shape the future of learning,
and help unlock the full educational potential of the web". Currently, Open Badges is
launched with the Mozilla backpack only — the Foundation says that ―other organizations
will be able to use Open Badges to make their own backpacks later this year.‖
