2005 Assessment Report Program: Department: Masters of Arts in Environmental Studies Completed By: Date: Urban Studies Kristé Vedegys-Duhigg June 1, 2005 Goal 1: Students will demonstrate proficient understanding of the relationship between core scientific concepts, scientific research, and technology and its use in environmental policy development and implementation as evidenced by their ability as evidenced by their ability to describe and apply these concepts to specific environmental policy issue in a paper and a presentation. Outcomes Relationship between science, technology and policy. Assessed using a policy and administration writing assignment. Relationship between science, technology and policy as demonstrated in a required presentation. Research Methods Rubric will be implemented beginning in Fall 2005, the next time the environmental policy course is taught, and in each fall thereafter. Rubric for presentation project has been used for the last several years. Outcomes Environmental policy making assessed through the required research project (thesis or exit project). Environmental policy making process and context as demonstrated in a required presentation.. Research Methods Rubric will be implemented as each student completes his or her exit project. Findings No exit projects were completed for the Spring 2005 semester. Rubric for presentation project has been used for the last several years. Outcomes Design of the research project for its organization and written proficiency. Presentation organization, substantive materials, appropriate use of analytical methods, and oral and visual presentation skills are assessed. Self-assessment, section 2 on skills using rubric 2C/3C. Identify types of problems and questions that lend themselves to quantitative analysis, formulate hypotheses and identify the means to test them quantitatively, and explain the meaning of results. Uses rubric 3D. Research Methods Assess using Rubric 2A/3A, Section 2 Skills, administered when the exit project is evaluated. Used by faculty supervisor This presentation is reviewed by two or more faculty spring semester when the class is offered, including the director of the MA program. Assessed using the audit form, Rubric 1B/2B/3B, Category 4 Conveyance of Ideas. Findings No exit projects were completed for the Spring 2005 semester.
