Math 516 Professor Lieberman February 9, 2009 ADDITIONAL DIRECTIONS FOR HOMEWORK #3 (1) Be sure to distinguish between similar looking symbols: Use < (which is typed as $<$) for less than but ⟨ (typed as $\langle$) for the symbol that the book uses for marking sequences. In addition, you should use the command $\colon$ for the colon in writing a function (as in f ∶ X → Y ), not a regular colon. (2) use the command usepackage if you want to use special symbols. For example, the MnSymbol package allows you to make the symbol for products ⨉ (typed as $\bigtimes$) expandable as in ⨉ Xα or ⨉ Xα . Other useful packages are mathrsfs α (for fancy scripts), textcomp (for making the complement symbol ~, typed as \texttildelow, available). (3) Use the enumerate, align (or align*), gather (or gather*), cases environments when appropriate. (4) Use the equation environment with the \label command to get numbered equations and to make TEX generate the correct equation numbers in your text. (5) It is always appropriate to ask me about a TEX command, package, or environment. 1
