Church of Saint Ignatius of Loyola September 24, 2006 Dear Parishioners, This past weekend was our September retreat at Eastern Point. And what a weekend it was! The weather was spectacular. We had expected rain and it turned out to be glorious, especially the sunrises. The Jesuit Retreat House at Eastern Point is one of the great gifts that the New England Province has to offer people. The natural beauty is breathtaking, the silence is golden and the presence of God is palpable in creation and in the prayer of the community who gathers. There were many “newcomers” for whom this was the first retreat experience at EP. I know that they would confirm what a wonderful experience this was. This past Sunday evening, however, when I was sharing the experience with some of our parishioners, one person commented that she assumed retreats were for “holy” people. She didn’t think that a retreat like this would be for her. I was simply amazed since this person is one of the most compassionate people whom I know who pours out her life in service of others. If anyone deserves the gift of a retreat at Eastern Point, it’s her! But this comment made me think of how many others of you wouldn’t consider taking a weekend to simply be loved by God, celebrating God’s many gifts in creation and in your life. Believe me, you don’t have to be “holy” to make one of these retreats. You just need to be human. Although Eastern Point Retreat House has a full schedule of weekend and other retreats, the parish retreats with the Jesuit Urban Center will take place April 27-29 (Easter) and September 14-16 (Autumn). If you don’t think this an experience like this is for you, think again! Speaking of things “Spiritual”, I want to extend an invitation to parishioners who might be interested in joining our Spiritual Development Commission”. It is this group that is involved in the planning and execution of retreats and other activities. We are especially in need of new members for the coming year. The Commission meets on the third Tuesday of the month. There’s frequently a dinner invitation for that evening as well! One of the things that the group will be planning is sessions on “Ignatian Prayer”. Although open to anyone, these monthly sessions will be for those who may be interested in doing the Spiritual Exercises in Everyday Life in the Fall of 2007. If you have any questions about this or the Spiritual Development Commission, please contact me at the rectory. I also want to take a moment to say thank you on this “All are Welcome” Weekend. Thank you to all of you who choose to make St Ignatius Parish your spiritual home. We have a wonderful parish community and I am always grateful for your presence and the many gifts you share with us. In Christ Rev. Robert VerEecke, S.J.
