COURSES TAUGHT
Grad 5124 – English Language & Literature Library Research Skills online (Fall 2006 – 2010): One-hour
required course for English graduate students that provides an introduction to the major aspects of
researching English literature and linguistics in print and electronic sources, as well as data management.
Other Courses: Over 200 one-hour instruction sessions for classes ranging from Freshmen Composition to
upper level major-required courses. Outside of library courses, from 2001 to 2005, I taught eleven freshmen
English composition sections and one 20th Century American Literature survey course.
PROFESSIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS
Professional Organization Activities—International
The Society for Science, Literature, and the Arts
Appointed Associate Bibliographer, 2010 – 2011
I first became a member of the bibliography committee for The Society for Science, Literature, and the Arts
in 2007. The bibliography we create serves as a point of reference for members of its twenty-four year old
international society and members of the public who are interested in the intersection of science and arts and
humanities.
Professional Organization Activities—National
American Library Association, Library Instruction Roundtable
Appointed Co-Chair Top 20 committee, 2009 – 2011
As co-chair of this committee, I helped facilitate the publication of annotated entries for the best twenty
library instruction articles of each year to be published each June in LIRT News.
Professional Organization Activities—State
Virginia Library Association
Appointed Member of Publications Committee, 2008 – 2010
Members of the VLA Publications Committee help monitor the content and quality of all VLA publications,
mentor those interested in publishing for any VLA publication, and update the Publications Committee
Manual as needed.
Other Professional Organization Activities
Association of Southeastern Research Libraries
Appointed Co-Chair, Collection Development Initiative, 2012 – 2014
Along with co-chair Michael Arthur and later, Heath Martin, I was charged with exploring cooperative
purchasing opportunities for ASERL libraries, fostering a sense of community across remote locations to
share information better, facilitating issue-based discussions such as methods of evaluating journal value and
usage, the use of e-readers in research libraries, establishing priorities for the coming year, and review
emerging issues/opportunities. I also helped keep the blog up to date and assisted with coordinating
webinars.
3
Electronic Resources and Libraries Conference
Appointed Member of the Program Committee, 2014 – present
Mentoring
Mentoring Senior Fellow, Residential College at West Ambler Johnston Hall (2012 – 2013): Selected by
Faculty Principal Ben Sax as senior fellow to students of the residential college and was responsible for
roughly 10 to15 students out of 800 living in the Residential College for their initial orientation day; facilitated
discussion on issues like diversity, gender, class, race, or what it means to be educated. Overall, the goal of the
program is to cultivate an experience for these students much like one experienced in a traditional, small
liberal arts college.
Librarianship Internship Program (2011 – 2014): Mentoring undergraduate English majors who are interested
in pursuing a MLIS degree. Given the interest, intern positions were set up between the library and the
English department’s internship coordinator, Steve Kark, so that interested students could earn three hours
class credit as they work with librarians from a variety of departments. Since inception, one student has
completed library school and another has found library staff employment.
McNair Scholars Mentoring Program (2007 – 2008; 2011): Mentoring for eight weeks students from lowincome families, first generation college students, and minorities. The program’s goal is to help prepare
students for graduate school.
