RENOVATION SUMMARY
Renovated 18 classrooms in the Robert C. Brown
Building (RCB): 12 exterior and 5 interior classrooms
plus one 78-seat theatre.
Retrofitted the South East Classroom Block (SECB):
5 classrooms.
Renewed and Upgraded the HVAC (Heating,
Ventilation and Air Conditioning) system in the RCB.
Installed a cooling system for Images Theatre.
Installed new classroom furniture and introduced
furniture labeling system.
Re-upholstered over 200 pieces of lounge furniture.

RENOVATION HIGHLIGHTS
Asbestos removal to over 5,200 sq ft of floor space.
Installed new eco-friendly rubber flooring – easy
and cost-effective maintenance.
Installed new acoustic ceiling tiles.
Electrical upgrade includes installation of LED
lighting system with two-tier controls and switches
with motion sensors.
Re-finished heritage doors and installed seethrough windows.
Installed new blackboards and increased writing
space by 30%.
Installed 8 additional WAP (Wireless Access Points)
for improved wireless coverage.
Installed new window blinds in all exterior
classrooms (2011).

SOUTH EAST CLASSROOM BLOCK
Retrofitted A/V equipment to SFU standards
which include: HD projectors, audio speakers,
wall mounted projector controller and overhead
projectors.
Installed new DDC (Digital Direct Control) for HVAC
which allows for central control and monitoring.
Paint and detailed cleaning.

HVAC UPGRADE
heating, ventilation, air conditioning
Building automation and thermal controls for all
classrooms had been upgraded from the original
pneumatic (compressed air) controls to electronic
direct digital control, which allows for central
control and monitoring.
Full cleaning and maintenance work to building
supply and return air ductwork and plenums for
improved indoor airflows and air circulation.
Added cooling system to Images Theatre to allow
for year round operation and improved summer
comfort conditions.
Other misc mechanical upgrades to address agerelated maintenance issues that are typical to this
vintage building.
AUDIO-VISUAL HIGHLIGHTS
Images Theatre – installed new scaler, document
camera and smart touch screen.
Introduced new Electronic Podiums into four AQ5000
classrooms, which includes a built-in computer and
smart touch screen plus HD projector.
Arranged training sessions for faculty on the use of
the new technologies.
Installed new LCD and overhead projectors,
projector screens and audio speakers. Installed
network into 18 RCB classrooms (2011).

MISC. OTHERS
Completed the installation of new LED lighting,
dimmers and control system in the Academic
Quadrangle Theatres (a.k.a. “Seven Sisters”):
AQ3003, AQ3005, AQ3149, AQ3150, AQ3153,
AQ3154, AQ3159.
Installed electrical outlets and accoustic panels in
EDB7618 Theatre.

FURNITURE RENEWAL
Installed over 450 new chairs and 135 classroom
tables. Introduced trapezoid tables for improved
learning experience.
Furniture Sweep - Inspected, repaired, cleaned and
sorted over 1750 pieces of furniture in the RCB and
WMC classrooms; re-used refurbished furniture.
Introduced Furniture Labeling System, which
includes furniture labelling and colour coding.
Arranged for timely furniture set-up using furniture
floor plans, posted behind each classroom door.
LOUNGE FURNITURE RENEWAL
Re-upholstered over 200 pieces of lounge furniture
in AQ2000, AQ3000, East Theatre Annex and TASC 1
& TASC 2.
Cleaned and repaired damaged lounge furniture in
Applied Science Building and installed refurbished
lounge furniture. Installed new rubber flooring in
lounge area.
