GUIDELINES FOR DECORATING FOR ALL HOLIDAYS
The Holiday Season is approaching and the Safety & Environmental Compliance Department would like to remind everyone
of the requirements for acceptable Decorative Materials and Christmas Trees. This policy references all University of
South Alabama buildings.

Live Cut Trees, which have been treated on the surface with a flame retardant spray or flocking, are acceptable.
The flame retardant certificate must be attached to the tree. Trees may be decorated with lighting tested and
approved by Factory Mutual (FM) or Underwriters’ Laboratory (UL). Lights must be disconnected when the area is
not occupied.

Live Trees which have not been cut and still have their roots attached thus enabling the tree to absorb water, stay
green and fresh are also acceptable. These trees also may use approved lights for decorations. Proper watering is
required.

Foil and metal constructed artificial trees shall not be used with electrical lights due to electrical short hazards.

Decorative materials may not be hung from ceilings in any sprinkled building.

Extension cords are not to be used. Surge strips with circuit breakers are permitted.

Natural Materials: Due to their combustible nature, the following materials are not to be used for decorations:
 Corn Stalks, Leaves, Branches, Raffia, Hay and Bamboo. Other natural materials such as pumpkins,
squash or gourds are permitted.

Paper, Streamers and Plastic: Crape paper and streamers used for decorations must be labeled “FIRE PROOF” or
“FLAME PROOF”. Be sure to read the label prior to purchasing these materials. Plastic bags and plastic sheeting
must not be used for decorating as these materials are highly combustible.

Emergency Equipment: Decorations must not block, cover or in any way obstruct any part of the fire alarm or
sprinkler systems. Extinguisher cabinets, emergency lights and exit lights may not be covered and regular corridor
lighting cannot be completely covered.

Exits: Exits must not be blocked or hidden. Corridors must not be “wall-papered” with combustible materials.
Combustible decorations are not permitted in the stairwells.

Candles and/or Open Flames: The use of lighted candles and/or open flames in any University Building is STRICTLY
PROHIBITED. Safe alternatives include flashlights and battery-operated candles.

Lighting: Electrical lights must be UL approved. The UL sticker must be intact. Lights should not be placed against
combustible material. Halogen lighting is prohibited throughout the university.

Temporary Structures: All temporary structures on any of the University campuses must be reviewed by the Safety
& Environmental Compliance Department/USA Fire Marshal prior to construction.
