at the University of South Alabama”
Letter from the
Dear Friends,
What a fall semester we had at the
University of South Alabama! I have never
witnessed so many great things happening on
campus in such a short period of time.
USA topped an historic milestone as
enrollment hit a record 15,007. The
University continues to attract students of
ever-increasing quality as well.
• More than 3,000 people came out for
the historic grand opening of Moulton
Tower and Alumni Plaza in a gala
celebration of alumni support for the
institution.
• Our new Student Recreation Center
opened to a groundswell of student
enthusiasm.
• Students and faculty in the College of
Engineering and the School of
Computer and Information Sciences are
seeing rapid progress on their new
home, Shelby Hall.
• As our health system continues to touch
lives through more than 250,000 patient
contacts a year, we have begun a major
expansion of USA Children’s &
Women’s Hospital.
• In addition to classroom contributions,
our faculty has set new records in
scholarly activity as evidenced by
contract and grant funding,
publications, and patents.
• The Jaguar football and marching band
programs are seeing a second year of
resounding success, with fans coming
out in even larger numbers than last
year’s inaugural season.
Even as great things are happening at USA,
the global recession has presented the greatest
economic challenges in our history.
Alabama’s universities have experienced a
staggering 29 percent reduction in state
funding over the past three years, and it
remains uncertain when this trend will
change. We are reducing costs where possible
and applying maximum creativity to weather
this slowdown. Unfortunately, our students
and families are being required to pay a
greater percentage of their educational cost
through higher tuition. We are gratified that
USA remains a great value as our tuition
remains well below our peer institutions
across the state.
As USA works to maintain its positive
momentum even in the most challenging of
times, your gifts and support have never
been more important in enabling us to
continue to provide a margin of excellence
in all of our key missions – teaching,
research, service and health care.
The University of South Alabama needs
you, appreciates you, and remains dedicated
to creating the future we all desire for the
Gulf Coast region.
Sincerely,
Gordon Moulton, President

A Message from the Vice President
Dr. Joseph F. Busta, Jr.
Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations
By reading President Moulton’s letter on the front page of this newsletter or by simply
driving by campus, you can see the exciting growth taking place. The University
continues to improve facilities, add new programs, and attract the brightest and most
talented faculty. Because of these improvements and enhancements, the University saw
record enrollment this year with over 15,000 students. We are proud of the record
enrollment, and it gives our Development and Alumni staff motivation to work harder
to provide needed charitable gift support. With more students comes an increased need
for scholarship support, special capital improvements, faculty enhancements and so
much more. It is through donors like you that we are able to keep up with the gift needs
of our growing University. Thank you for your continued support.
USA Board of Trustees Elects Officers
The University Board of Trustees recently elected officers for the
next three-year term and welcomed an additional member to the
Board.
Attorney Jim Yance of Malbis has been
elected chair. Mr. Yance is a 1970 graduate of
the University with a bachelor’s degree in
Political Science and a law degree from the
University of Alabama. He was appointed to
the Board in 2006 by Gov. Bob Riley,
representing the state at large. Campaign USA,
the University’s first comprehensive fundraising
campaign, was led by Mr. Yance, raising over
$93 million.
Dr. Steve Furr of Jackson was elected vice
chair. Dr. Furr, a physician in Washington
County, earned two degrees at USA: a
bachelor’s in biology in 1976 and a doctor of
medicine in 1981. He was appointed to the
Board in 2006 by Gov. Riley to represent
Choctaw, Clarke, and Washington Counties.
Ms. Bettye Maye, a retired educator, was reelected to another term as the Board secretary.
She has represented Marengo and Sumter
Counties since 1993 and was re-appointed in
2005 by Gov. Riley.
Dr. Scott Charlton was reappointed by
Governor Bob Riley to serve an additional
term representing Coffee and Crenshaw
Counties. Dr. Charlton was originally
appointed to serve on the Board in 2007.
Governor Riley has appointed USA Mitchell
College of Business alumnus, Thomas
Corcoran, of Loxley, to the USA Board of
Trustees. Mr. Corcoran succeeds longtime
trustee and retired Fairhope Mayor, Jim Nix,
who has served on the University’s Board for
more than two decades and recently completed
his second term representing Baldwin and Escambia Counties.
“USA is excited about the appointment of Tom Corcoran, and at
the same time highly appreciative of the more than 20 years of
dedicated service to the board and the University provided by
Jim Nix,” said USA President Gordon Moulton.
A current member of the USA National Alumni Association
Board of Directors, Corcoran holds distinction as a 2008 recipient
of the University’s Distinguished Alumni Award. Mr. Corcoran and
his wife, Dr. Barbara Blumer-Corcoran, are dedicated USA
supporters and philanthropists, having endowed numerous
scholarships at USA, including awards in athletics, business,
continuing education, and medicine. He is also a former member
of the Leadership Team for Campaign USA, the University’s first
comprehensive fundraising campaign.
“I am very honored to be appointed to the University of South
Alabama Board of Trustees,” Corcoran said. “The growth and
impact of the University have been phenomenal, particularly the
last ten years under Gordon Moulton’s leadership. USA’s future
looks very bright, and I look forward to my service on the Board.”
Corcoran is retired from Fort Dodge Animal Health, where he
served as president for more than 20 years. He earned his Bachelor
of Science degree in marketing from USA in 1970 and later
completed the Executive Management Program at Columbia
University.

USA Board of Trustees Elects Officers continued
Gov. Bob Riley has appointed University of South Alabama alumnus James H. “Jimmy” Shumock, of Mobile, to
the USA Board of Trustees. Shumock, who will hold a state at large seat on the Board, succeeds retired labor relations
leader Don Langham.
“In addition to being an accomplished alumnus of the University of South Alabama, Jimmy Shumock has been an
involved and enthusiastic supporter for many years,” Moulton said. “USA will certainly benefit from his knowledge,
perspective, and dedication to the institution.”
“My wife and I love the University of South Alabama, its mission, students, and the people associated with it,”
Shumock said. “We have enjoyed seeing the University grow, and we have played an active part in the increasingly
greater contribution USA is making to our community and region. I look forward to my increased personal involvement as a trustee with
the University in support of its continued progress.”
A certified public accountant, Shumock earned his bachelor’s degree in 1980 from USA’s Mitchell College of Business. He is currently
the chief executive officer of Thompson Holdings, Inc. and Thompson Engineering, Inc., a multi-disciplined engineering design,
environmental consulting, construction management, construction inspection and materials testing firm. He has more than 27 years of
experience in the design and consulting business.
Shumock is a lifetime member of the USA National Alumni Association and serves as president of the Jaguar Athletic Fund, the
volunteer and donor arm of the USA department of athletics. He has been instrumental in the success of Jaguar athletics for more than 25
years through the JAF, of which he was a founding member, and through earlier USA booster organizations.
Shumock’s firm, Thompson Engineering, has served for four years as title sponsor of the Jaguar Challenge Golf Tournament, the
signature annual fundraising event for Jaguar athletics. Shumock has also supported academics at USA and has endowed a scholarship
program in the Mitchell College of Business.
USA’s board has 17 members, including the governor and the state superintendent of education serving as ex-officio members. A regular
term on the USA Board is 12 years.
Final Payment Made On Site
SSAB, formerly Ipsco Steel, recently presented their last $25,000 pledge payment to the
University of South Alabama College of Engineering on site at the College’s upcoming new
home, Shelby Hall: Engineering and Computing Sciences.
SSAB committed to the $125,000 gift in 2006. Two areas within Shelby Hall will be
named for SSAB - the Engineering Conference Room and the Mechanical Engineering
Materials Testing Laboratory. Each room will feature a special inscribed donor appreciation
plaque to recognize this gift from SSAB. In addition, the company will be recognized on the
College’s Honor Wall of Donors, to be located in the atrium of the new building.
The funds from this gift will support the Engineering Excellence Endowment, an endowed
fund created to help the College’s pursuit of academic excellence. The fund allows Dean John
Steadman to continually assess priorities and goals, and direct funding to special areas of
opportunity and/or concern. SSAB’s gift will also support the purchase of laboratory
equipment in the new building.

Rec Center Improves Campus Life!
On September 16, 2010, the University had the pleasure of dedicating another
new building on campus. The new 116,000-square-foot Student Recreation
Center is a major student life facility. Designed to enhance student life on campus
and contribute to the physical health of the student body, the state-of-the-art
facility houses multi-purpose athletic courts, a cardiovascular theatre, weight
rooms with both machines and free weights, multi-purpose rooms for aerobic
classes and martial arts, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a spa, saunas,
racquetball courts, rock-climbing, children’s play area, and a dining facility
featuring smoothies and healthy refreshments.
The entrance to the new Student Recreation Center features a 13-foot bronze
sculpture symbolizing the importance of teamwork, as well as physical and
spiritual health. Bob Wilfong’s sculpture, “It Takes Three,” symbolizes teamwork
and a strong spiritual foundation that can overcome any burden. This is Wilfong’s
first major public art project in Mobile. Ramsey Stuart and Riley-Stuart Supply
Company, Inc. of Mobile, donated $25,000 toward the cost of the sculpture.

Summer Enrichment Program Builds Momentum
Remember Newton’s first law of motion?
How about his second? Chances are that if you
need to have those laws explained, you could
ask one of the students who participated in the
Summer Enrichment Program created by
USA’s College of Education. Not only could
they explain it, they could demonstrate just
how laws of motion work. Around 150
students participate in this unique program

and science skills. It is a great opportunity for
these eager third through fifth grade students and their teachers. Summer Enrichment teachers are pre-service teachers ready to begin their
career, and they are excited to have their first opportunity to guide these students through hands-on lessons in science and math.
The momentum for this program began with the generous support of the J. L. Bedsole Foundation, The A.S. Mitchell Foundation, the
Aramark Corporation, 100 Black Men of Greater Mobile, and the USA College of Education. Your continued support will assure these
students of lifelong learning set in motion through the Summer Enrichment Program.
USA Administrator and Wife Pledge Engineering Scholarships
USA Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Graduate School, Dr. Keith Harrison and his
wife, Leora, have made a $1 million estate gift to the University toward an endowed scholarship for chemical
engineering majors. Dr. Harrison has served at USA since 1986 and has taught chemical engineering students on the
undergraduate and graduate levels.
The estate gift adds to the existing endowment of the B. Keith Harrison Endowed Scholarship in Chemical
Engineering, a scholarship geared towards helping deserving undergraduate chemical engineering students. “In view of
my many enjoyable years at USA and the beneficial impact that this University has on our community, we wanted to
contribute to this effort,” Dr. Harrison said. “We felt that funding scholarships for students would have an impact in
helping many students become first-generation college graduates. We chose to favor chemical engineering because of my own background and
observation that college graduates in this major are virtually assured of some success in life. We felt that scholarships have an impact of helping
students and benefiting the University simultaneously.”
Leora Harrison said, “I support Keith’s desire to help these students and USA as I also feel gratitude towards USA for the education I have
received there.” Ms. Harrison received her Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from USA in 2006.
$1 Million Estate Gift Received Borg Family Donates Vast Mineral Collection
The College of Arts and Sciences Department of Earth Sciences recently
From Mrs. Margarette G. Griffin received
a large mineral collection from the family of the late Alan Borg.
USA’s pediatric cancer research team at Children’s &
Women’s Hospital will benefit from the generosity of the
late Margarette Griffin who directed nearly $1 million of
her estate towards the goal of combating and eliminating
childhood cancer. Mrs. Griffin’s dream was to “see the
University’s children’s cancer program become a national
leader in discovering and implementing new and better
ways to detect, treat, and cure children who become
afflicted with this terrible disease.”
While Mr. and Mrs. Griffin did not have children of
their own, both supported many efforts geared towards
improving children’s lives throughout their lifetimes. The
establishment of the Margarette G. Griffin Pediatric Cancer
Research Endowment Fund was one of Mrs. Griffin’s final
gifts and will forever support treatment and care for the
many young patients throughout the Gulf Coast area who
are served by our hospital.
“The 4,000 pounds of geological specimens and related materials were
collected by Mr. Borg throughout his lifetime and includes a wonderful range
of fluorescent minerals,” said Dr. Doug Haywick, Associate Professor of Earth
Sciences. “With the donation of this collection, the University has inherited
what is likely the best collection of fluorescent minerals on the Gulf Coast.”
Ms. Betsy Borg said she wanted her late husband’s collection to find a home
in an educational setting, due to his lifelong devotion to education and rock
collecting. Ms. Borg said she is proud that her husband’s passion for minerals
will be remembered by the students who will use and appreciate his collection.
Dr. Haywick and one of the department’s graduate students traveled to
Ms. Borg’s home in North Carolina to bring the collection to USA. “Now,
students are in the process of sorting and cataloging the vast Borg collection.
When archiving is completed, specimens from the collection will be available
for classroom instruction, research, and museum display. The scope of the
collection allows students a vast wealth of specimens they haven’t had in the
past,” Dr. Haywick said.

USA Alumnus, Local Artist, Donates Sculpture to USA Library
USA alumnus, Josh Ashley, a local artist, has donated a sculpture to the University Library. His “#10”
(Can-Can Girl) exhibits the creativity Mr. Ashley brings to his artwork an assemblage of debris, defunct
tools, instruments, and personal effects he transforms into his masterpieces. His gift will be on permanent
display in the first floor atrium of the USA Main Library on campus.
“I enjoyed my time at South Alabama and I love the school,” Mr. Ashley said. “Giving a piece of my
work to the Library’s collection is more an honor to me than a gift to it. I am very excited to have the
“Can-Can Girl” find a home there. I hope she inspires at least a smile out of everyone who stops to see

Spotlight on Scholarship Recipients
Caitlin Jaynes, a freshman from Fairfield, Ohio, has
been awarded the Daniel Foundation of Alabama
Endowed Scholarship for Teachers. Caitlin is excited
about attending USA because of the “great price, great
location, great education, and great people!” Caitlin
appreciates the Daniel Foundation’s support of future
teachers at USA by providing funds for the scholarship.
“I can’t thank the Daniel Foundation of Alabama enough. Without
this scholarship, I was worried I wouldn’t be able to afford school and
would have to take a semester off to work and save. It’s difficult
attending college out of state and this scholarship allows me to do so.”
Jennifer Black, a junior from Hoover, Alabama, was
chosen to receive the Chi Omega Beta Theta Pearl
Scholarship for the fall semester. Jennifer plans to be a
practicing physician and chose USA because she was
accepted into USA’s College of Medicine Early
Acceptance Program. “I am honored to be selected for
this scholarship, because it means that I have
represented my sorority’s values the way I should. This scholarship also
allows me to focus on my studies instead of working this semester.”

Beverly Dykes, Dr. Debra Davis, Dean of the College of Nursing,
and Chanté Hendrix, Development Officer.
Mrs. Beverly Dykes, owner of Curves Fairhope and a resident of Fairhope, recently
established a $5,000 book endowment in the College of Nursing in honor of her mother.
Mrs. Dykes’ mother, the late Ms. Esther Danielson Jones, began her quest to achieve an
education in nursing in 1937 at the age of 17. She graduated from the Lutheran Immanuel
Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, in September 1943 as a registered nurse and with a fourmonth affiliate course in psychiatric nursing. Shortly before her graduation, she married
Dean Jones and later they moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma. She became a devoted mother of four
and continued to serve the health care community for four decades working in army hospitals
and public schools. She and her husband moved to Fairhope in 1999 where she passed away
in February 2005 at the age of 85.
Mrs. Dykes chose to create this book endowment to honor her mother’s many years of
service in the nursing field. The Esther Danielson Jones Endowed Book Scholarship will
benefit future College of Nursing students in their quest for an education.

Opportunities toGive
Cash or securities—make the most immediately useable gifts to USA.
All gifts of cash or securities can be designated for any purpose you choose.
Corporate matching gifts—many companies encourage their
employees’ philanthropy by matching, doubling, or tripling the
employee’s gift. If you work for a matching gift company, just send your
employer’s matching gift form with your gift, and USA will take care of
the details. Both you and your company will be recognized for the
matching gift.
Bequest through a will or living trust—many donors find a bequest
the most convenient way to leave a legacy to USA.
Charitable trust or other life income plan—various trust
arrangements such as charitable remainder unitrusts, charitable
remainder annuity trusts, and charitable lead trusts may enable you
simultaneously to make a gift to the University, retain income from the
assets, and secure a tax advantage.
Gifts of real and personal property—your gift of real estate, works of
art, collectibles, rare books, copyrights, and oil and gas interests may be
sold and the proceeds endowed or used for capital or operating funds.
Gifts of useable scientific equipment or computers may go immediately
into the classroom or research laboratory.
Gift with funds that are returned to you or passed to your loved
ones—you can make a gift of cash or other assets through an
arrangement that will provide USA with annual gifts over a specified
period and then pass the gift principal to your heirs or have it returned
to you. These creative gift plans offer valuable income, as well as gift and
estate tax savings, depending upon which type you choose.
IRA’s and qualified retirement plans—because these assets may be
subject to heavy taxation when passed to your heirs, they are wonderful
assets to consider using for charitable giving. Your gift can be made
simply by designating USA as a beneficiary of your retirement plan. If,
however, you meet the minimum age for withdrawals and would benefit
from a deduction to use against your current taxes, you might also
consider a lifetime distribution to USA. Due to the dynamic nature of
the law, you should consult your tax advisor prior to making such a gift.
Life insurance—a life insurance policy that is no longer needed can
be donated during your lifetime to support your favorite University
program. Such a gift offers you income and estate tax savings. USA
can also be named as a beneficiary of a new or existing policy.
