The Boston College Center for Human Rights and International Justice Presents: Human Rights & Judicial Independence in Guatemala Wednesday, January 27, 2016 • 12:00 p.m. McGuinn Hall, Room 521 • Boston College Claudia Escobar With , former Guatemalan judge and current Scholar at Risk at Harvard University’s Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study Ms. Escobar spoke publicly last year on the acute corruption in the judicial selection process in Guatemala, which was part of a wave of popular revolt against the government that ultimately led to the arrest of the president and vice president of the country on corruption charges. As a result of her brave actions, however, she received threats and was forced to relocate to the US with her family to seek refuge. In this presentation, she will speak how this corrupted process represses judicial independence, which in turn feeds into the larger problem of corruption in the country, and will discuss how it might be addressed.
