SUMMARY

THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES ’

RECORDS DECISION PANEL, 28 MAY 2014

Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) Special Collection :

Burgess and Maclean papers (190 files from 1949 to 1983)

The Panel agreed that FCO should select all the files relating to the story of

KGB spies, Burgess and Maclean. The files demonstrate how these events shaped FCO security policies and selection is supported by Operational

Selection Policy 48: Case Files.

Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) Special Collection :

Departmental Day Books (2067 volumes from 1919 to 1943)

The Panel agreed that the Day Books should be selected as they provide a useful summary of all incoming and outgoing correspondence of the Foreign

Office from 1919 to 1943. It was noted that the books are particularly helpful to researchers as they include a précis of correspondence which has not been selected for preservation at The National Archives. The National Archives already holds Day Books for the Cle rks’ Department under FO 1103. These

2067 volumes which cover all other FCO departments will be added to this series.

Extension of OSP19: Records of the Department for Education

The Panel approved the reviewed and extended Operational Selection Policy

19 which the Department for Education has drafted in conjunction with The

National Archives. This draft document will now be published on The National

Archives website and put out to public consultation for a 3 month period.

Date of next meeting
