Title:NewresultsonequatorialthermospheredynamicsfromBrazilandPeru Abstract:SincetheprevioustalkpresentedatBostonCollegeinAugust2012onequatorial thermospheredynamics,newprogresshasbeenmaderegardingthemeasurementsof windsandtemperaturesintheSouthAmericanlongitudinalregion.Evidenceindicating thedevelopmentofnegativemeridionalwindgradientsduringtheeveninghasbeenfound forthenortheasternregionofBrazilbetweenthegeomagneticequatorandthesouthern Appletonanomaly.Theexistenceofthesegradientssupportstheideaofapossible mechanismthatmightunderliethedestabilizationoftheF‐regionplasmacausing scintillationandESFevents.Inaddition,aninterestingapproachtothestudyofthe equatorialthermosphereneutralwindfieldhasbeendevelopedthatisbaseduponanew methodofmappingtheneutralwindfield.ThisisastrategyinwhichtheDopplershiftsfor 8equi‐spacedazimuthalobservationsofthethermosphereneutralwindfieldareusedto determinetheparametersofamodelforthewindfieldmapfeaturingthefirstorder expansionoftheuandvcomponentsoftheneutralwindvectorintermsofthezonaland meridionalgradientsforbothuandvvectorcomponents.Resultsillustratesystematic changesinthevorticityanddivergenceofthewindfieldasafunctionoflocaltimethat occurasaresultoftheeveningday‐to‐nightpressuregradientandthesemi‐diurnaltidal wavestructurethatunderliesthepolewardpropagationofthemidnightpressurebulge throughthethermosphere.
