THE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION is one of nine colleges and schools of the University of South Alabama. Founded on February 1, 1967, the College has a total annual budget exceeding 14 million dollars and supports 85 different programs leading to six distinct degrees. The College is nationally accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education and its educator preparation programs are accredited by the Alabama State Department of Education. THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, PHYSICAL EDUCATION, & LEISURE STUDIES (HPELS) currently has 13 full-time tenure track faculty, 3 non-tenure track instructional faculty, and 3 staff members. The Department offers: undergraduate programs in Health Education, Physical Education, Leisure Studies, Exercise Science and a Coaching Certificate Program. Leisure Studies concentrations are available in Therapeutic Recreation and Sport and Recreation Management. Graduate programs are offered in Health Education, Physical Education, and Exercise Science. RESPONSIBILITIES The position is a full-time tenure track academic appointment (9-month) at the rank of Assistant Professor. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in exercise science core to include exercise physiology, health-fitness, nutritional aspects of exercise, and sport-conditioning in healthy, clinical, and/or athletic populations; conducting, publishing, and presenting research; providing academic advisement; supervising student internship experiences; participating in curriculum development; collaborating with faculty; and providing service to the Department, College, and University. The successful applicant must display the ability to employ effective teaching practices, provide experiential student learning opportunities and engage in program-related community engagement. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Applicants must have an earned doctorate in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Biomechanics or a closely related discipline, ABD’s near completion of the degree will be considered. Candidates should have demonstrated skills and/or experience in teaching, research, and service with the ideal candidate complementing our existing program and faculty. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Preference will be given to applicants with experience in the area of health related fitness and/or the promotion of physical activity. Demonstrated leadership activities and certifications from ACSM, NSCA, or other related organizations are preferred.
