Requirements for Admission
Alt. M.Ed. | Art Education P-12 | Class-A Certification
Degree Requirements
• USA Graduate School Degree Requirements: Bachelor’s degree and a minimum GPA (A=4.0) on ALL undergraduate
coursework of 3.0 for regular admission, or 2.5 for provisional admission, or 2.75 on the last 60 hours of college work.
GPA is calculated by the Office of Admissions

ALSDE Degree Requirements: Bachelor’s degree or higher with a minimum grade point average (GPA) overall of 2.50.
*This GPA must be documented on the official transcript of the degree granting institution and must be the GPA that was
used as the basis for granting the degree.
Test & Background Requirements
• Satisfactory performance on the Alabama Educator Certification Testing Program. Scores must be sent from AECTP to USA.
o Registration for the AECTP (formerly APTTP) can be completed online at http://www.act.org/alabamaectp.
o APTTP is only valid if passed prior to 9/1/12.

Clear Alabama State Department of Education background check.
o Information and registration for the ALSDE background check and fingerprinting sites are available at
http://www.cogentid.com/alabama.
Application Requirements
• Completed Graduate School Application with the Office of Admissions.
o Application and semester deadlines are available at http://www.southalabama.edu/admissions.
o All supporting documents can be emailed to admiss@southalabama.edu.
•
Official transcripts from each institution attended since high school, regardless of whether credit was earned.
•
Two recommendation forms attesting to applicant’s scholarship and/or professional abilities.
•
Two page narrative, typed and double spaced, stating applicant’s career goals and purpose for graduate study.
Additional Requirements for Admission
Option 1:
• Passing score on appropriate Praxis II subject exam. Praxis II requirements are subject to change as dictated by the ALSDE.

o If taken prior to 9/1/2012, Art: Content Knowledge Test Code: 0133 Min. Score: 150
OR
Option 2:
• Official GRE or MAT test scores sent from testing agency to USA. http://www.gre.com or http://www.millersanalogies.com
• * An academic major in the teaching field or, if an academic major is not on the official transcript, 32 semester hours of
credit appropriate to the teaching field including at least 19 semester hours of upper-division credit.
If admitted with Option 2, a passing score on the appropriate Praxis II subject exam is still required before registering for the
internship.
