Local Government Retirement PASQUOTANK COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES IS AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER Position Responsibilities: This position is part of the Administrative Support Unit and is involved 100% in duties acting as an agency receptionist. The purpose of this position is to assist the public either by telephone or in person by providing information or connecting the client with the appropriate staff person who can provide assistance. This staff person has constant contact with the general public in order to determine which agency staff person can best help the client, and to coordinate/direct clients to agency staff workers. This staff also advises persons about other agencies that may be able to help them and gives limited information about other agencies/services in the area. The nature of work in this position involves constant changes in the work environment because the receptionist is interacting with every client, both in person and over the phone. Agency staff also place many expectations and demands on the individual in this position which requires flexibility in work habits as well as a broad knowledge base to perform the unusual and varied requests that are made by staff and/or the clients of this agency. The work is often performed in an intense, hectic, and highly emotionally charged environment that requires that this staff be patient and aware of the different ways to interact and communicate under varied circumstances. This position has to follow established office procedures including the duties unique to this position such as completing logs and forms relative to established state monitored procedures. Because of the different programs operated at various times of the year, office procedures must be modified and adjusted to meet the increased demand upon the receptionist to accurately document activities following established procedures. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Significant knowledge of office and agency procedures, methods, and practices. Significant knowledge of and ability to use correct grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and office terminology to compose and/or proofread correspondence, reports and other materials. Significant knowledge of accounting procedures, mathematics and their application in the work environment. Ability to learn and to independently apply laws and departmental rules and regulations covering all agency programs and services. Ability to review and process information to determine conclusions, actions or compliance with applicable laws, rules, or regulations. Ability to apply a variety of work related formulas or mathematical calculations. Ability to record, compile, summarize and perform basic analysis of data. Ability to independently work with people, some of which may be upset, irate, or hostile, with courtesy and tact in performing public contact duties that may be sensitive in nature. May require the ability to supervise and coordinate the work of other staff, student workers or volunteers. Minimum Training and Experience: Graduation from high school and demonstrated possession of knowledge, skills, and abilities gained through at least two years of office assistant/secretarial experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Other: All applicants must type 45 wpm. Typing tests will be administered by the N.C. Employment Security Commission at the time of application.
