Founded in 1702 as the original capital of the Louisiana Territory and nestled on the beautiful Gulf of Mexico, Mobile
boasts a rich history and prime location. Mobile is a fast growing cultural, recreational and economic center, and an ideal
community to complement your experience here at the University of South Alabama. The city supports South Alabama’s
educational purpose with on the job training, cooperative education, and student employment in area businesses and
health centers. The Port of Mobile has always played a key role in the economic health of the city since its beginning,
and is supplemented with growing sectors in aerospace and is home to companies such as Austal and Airbus.
Mobile is the original site of Mardi Gras in the
United States, instituted in 1704. Our city is home
to the USS Alabama Battleship and beautiful
Bellingrath Gardens and Home. Mobile is also
known for having the oldest organized Mardi
Gras celebrations in the United States, dating to
the 18th century of its early colonial period.
Seafood makes for some of the South’s tastiest
eats and Mobile has much of it to offer. Join us
as we share some of the greatest comfort food
in the world. This section of the Gulf Coast
offers a climate perfect for long days at the beach.
Participate in water sports of every kind and enjoy
one of the most popular beaches in the South.
One of the Gulf Coast’s cultural centers,
Mobile offers several art museums, a professional
ballet company and a large concentration of
historic architecture. On the second Friday of
each month is the Art Walk in downtown Mobile,
making for a eventful night out with friends.
Mobile is home to such national events as the Reese’s Senior Bowl
football game, Mardi Gras, the Azalea Trail Run, Distinguished
Young Woman Scholarship Program, and the GoDaddy Bowl
football game. Mobile is the original site of Mardi Gras in the United
States, instituted in 1704, 62 years before New Orleans adopted
the celebration. Mobile is the home of notables Jimmy Buffett,
Hank Aaron, and Winston Groom author of Forrest Gump.
The biggest and longest running music
festival in the state, Mobile’s BayFest
has been a source of pride for the
local people and a source of support
for the local economy for over two
decades. Like any proper music festival,
BayFest aims to please the taste buds
as much as the ears, and Alabama
Gulf Seafood is the top choice for
visitors who want to sample the Gulf
Coast’s finest seafood and natives who
have been spoiled on it for years.
The mission of the University of
South Alabama is to offer high
quality programs of teaching,
research, public service and health
care that create, communicate,
preserve, and apply knowledge in
service to the people of Alabama
as citizens in a global community.
The University of South Alabama
was admitted to membership in the
Southern Association of Colleges
and Schools on December 4, 1968.
The University of South Alabama is
accredited to award baccalaureate,
master’s and doctoral degrees.
