Queensborough Community College DEPARTMENT: Non-teaching Department 2013-2014 Academic Year Center for International Affairs, Immigration and Study Abroad 2013-2014 Academic Year MISSION INSTRUCTIONS: Your mission statement should be no more than 80 words in length. The Center for International Affairs, Immigration & Study Abroad (the Center) primarily assists international F-1 visa students in setting academic goals while maintaining their legal status during their studies at Queensborough Community College (QCC). The Center also provides these students with professional development for life after F-1. Additionally, the Center hosts CUNY Citizenship Now! events on campus to assist students and community members with immigration issues. Lastly, the Center promotes CUNY study abroad programs and scholarship opportunities; provides advisement and application assistance; and conducts pre-travel seminars. A. DEPARTMENT CORE ACTIVITIES AND PERFORMANCE Core Activities Key Performance Indicators Indicators to Be Assessed Briefly list the major activities conducted or performed to support the mission of the department. Briefly list the corresponding Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that measure the effectiveness of the department’s activity. Key performance indicators are not outcomes—for example, a KPI might be “volume of service,” whereas an outcome might be “increase volume of service by 5 percent”). An immigration law requirement list is given to students to acknowledge and sign. All requirements are talked about in depth. Various student service departments are invited to introduce themselves and speak about their services. Yes or no. A student questionnaire is filled out at the end to determine if they learned something they didn’t know beforehand and identify which information was most helpful to them. Yes. Reduced course loads for academic difficulties were reduced from the previous year. New Student Orientation Workshop (2 days - one in Fall & the other in Spring semester ) Academic Advisement The majority of new students were able to complete their classes successfully due to proper advisement. The Center tracked the academic progress of each student over the semester, and notified them if they received alerts submitted by their professors to rectify any problems they were having in their courses so they can pass their courses. Academic Achievement We are waiting for all the final grades to be posted to determine the percentage of F-1 students who Yes. This analysis is based on the Total Queensborough Community College College Advisory Committee for Study Abroad Special Orientation Sections (ST-100) Study Abroad Advisement B. Non-teaching Department 2013-2014 Academic Year achieved a 2.5 GPA or higher. We will also determine if this percentage is greater than last year’s. The Center promotes and administers the Salzburg Global Seminar scholarship program which is held during spring recess. The Center with the Committee sets application requirements, reviews applications, selects students and prepares them for Salzburg participation. The Center also hosts community events promoting global citizenship. The Center tracked all new F1 students to make sure they attended and completed their ST-100 classes with a “P” passing grade each semester. The Center with the committee promotes winter and summer session study abroad programs available at CUNY schools by hosting study abroad fairs twice a year. The Center promotes and advises programs students can participate in according to their academic and professional goals. The Center also promotes scholarship opportunities for students studying abroad. Cumulative GPA ending for Spring 2014. We received 38 applications and interviewed all 38 applicants. We selected 16 recipients. Yes. Yes. We have an increase in study abroad participation for summer session 2014. We currently have six students attending CUNY programs and one student attending a non-CUNY program. One student also received the national Gilman scholarship. New F-1 students Continuing are required to attend a new student orientation where they learn about their immigration responsibilities and sign an acknowledgement form. The Department also holds many workshops to educate about them about how they can maintain their status.
