It provides a welcoming environment for students and faculty for teaching and learning. Offering a variety of research and educational resources, including technology, as well as support services, the Student Learning Center is a fusion that facilitates collaboration, exchange of information and functions to support current and life-long learning for all members of our diverse community. A. DEPARTMENT CORE ACTIVITIES AND PERFORMANCE Core Activities Key Performance Indicators Briefly list the major activities conducted or performed to support the mission of the department. Briefly list the corresponding Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that measure the effectiveness of the department’s activity. Key performance indicators are not outcomes— for example, a KPI might be “volume of service,” whereas an outcome might be “increase volume of service by 5 percent”). Depending on activity, KPIs may include the following: Provision of academic support to QCC students completing credit-bearing courses in the following areas: Arts and Humanities (Foreign Languages; Art History); Business; Health Sciences; History; Education; Nursing; Sciences (Astronomy; Biology; Chemistry; Geology; Physics); Social Sciences Individual and group tutoring Review sessions for specific courses Coffee and Conversation sessions to improve communication skills and cultural knowledge related to Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, and Spanish English Language Learners workshops to develop and/or improve communication skills for students in sciences, preNursing or business courses Review sessions for Math for Chemistry, Physics and/or Nursing Provision of human anatomy models, textbooks, DVDs for review/research B. Associate Director Alexandra Nestoras was hired during the 2012-2013 academic year. Constant “bottleneck” of students waiting for tutoring, support, access to resources Need to update information and design brochure that is in line with the college’s design of brochures Fall 2012 Security is becoming increasingly of concern. The center served a little over 1500 students during its first year in 2006-2007. During the 2012-2013 year, the center served 9,691 students. As a result, the center faces challenges regarding not only quality or quantity of services but basic safety and security for students and staff. For further discussion of this issue, see Attachment A. Equipment is satisfactory Spring 2013 The changes have alleviated some of the problems, issues mentioned. Spring 2013 Received positive feedback E. ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION, 2012-2013 Key Performance Indicator* Grades of C or higher Target outcome(s) for Key Performance Indicator** Actual outcome(s) Recommended action plan 8% more QCC students who attended tutoring for 5-10 hours will earn grades of C or higher than students who did not attend tutoring. 80% of students who completed 5-10 hours of tutoring earned grades of ≥ C as compared to 63% of students who did not attend tutoring Continue to work with faculty and tutors to help tutors continually strengthen and improve their skills and subject content knowledge; communicate with administration and academic departments, Recommended status of Core Activity and KPI (see menu) Continue 4 Queensborough Community College Non-teaching Department and earned grades of ≥ C; a difference of 17%. This difference exceeds our goal of 8%. For additional information regarding grades and completion rates, see Attachments B1 and B2. Course Completion Tutor Development 8% more QCC students who attended tutoring for 5-10 hours will complete their courses than students who did not attend tutoring. Faculty evaluations and tutor surveys regarding self-perceptions of tutoring skills will demonstrate that tutoring skills significantly improve with time and experience. 84% of students who completed 5-10 hours of tutoring completed their courses as compared to 78% of students who did not receive tutoring services. This is a 6% difference although it did not meet our goal of 8%. 100% of faculty evaluations suggest that tutor skills improve over time and with experience. Student evaluations of tutors suggest that 95+% students are very satisfied with tutors at the SLC. Tutors’ selfperceptions suggest that with time and experience, tutors develop skills as well as self-confidence. Work on development of Development particularly the Chairs, regarding the importance and need for the involvement of Faculty Coordinators/Academic Facilitators to become involved with training and evaluation of tutors, acting as liaison and advocate for the SLC with academic departments. For further discussion and of this area, see Attachment B3. Continue to work with faculty, students and tutors to help students complete their courses, particularly through encouraging students to visit the center on a consistent basis so that development of both good habits and a “relationship” with the center are established. Faculty serving as Coordinators/ Facilitators evaluate tutors regarding subject matter knowledge at least once each semester. 100% of those evaluations completed indicated that tutors possessed the required knowledge. July 2013 Continue Continue Evaluations of tutors and the Student Learning Center are made available to students during the last 3 weeks of each semester. The questionnaires are completed anonymously and placed in a designated box near the Office Assistant’s desk. Overall, students rated the tutors and the center very positively For further information and discussion, see Attachment C. For additional and detailed information tutors’ self-perceptions regarding abilities, patience, communication skills, etc. see Attachments D1 and D2. July 2013 8 Queensborough Community College Non-teaching Department July 2013 Attachment A Student Learning Center Security Issues and Concerns The center is an open area with 2 “sides” divided by a wall. All credit-bearing courses, with the exception of Math and English, are tutored by the center. Some courses are “high volume” regarding the number of students seeking tutoring assistance. For example, requests for help in Biology 301 and 302 (Anatomy & Physiology) courses are so numerous that tutoring is usually provided to small or sometimes large groups. Whether the session focuses on lecture, lab or the examination and understanding of human anatomy models, these sessions can be, and usually are, loud with much discussion going back and forth between students and tutors. The noise and activity can interfere with other ongoing tutoring sessions in which these students need a quiet, calm environment in which they can speak with and listen to the tutors who are helping them clarify understanding of content or demonstrate competency in the subject(s) of concern. The number of students who have communicated their dissatisfaction with space and/or noise level has increased during the last few years in direct proportion to the increase in usage of center services by students. The other issue that has cropped up in recent years often occurs in environments that are overcrowded, and that is dealing with high stress levels that can result in serious problems. Students will often arrive at the center already stressed because of upcoming deadlines, tests, papers. If their requests for tutoring cannot be immediately met, some may communicate more than just disappointment, often anger. To a point, this is understandable but this has happened more and more, even during evenings and weekends, when the supervisor may not be present. The loudness, physical crowding and general congestion of the center are such that students’ tempers may flare with each other, tutors and staff. Although the installation of cameras suggests that much activity in the center is recorded, additional concerns exist regarding exit strategies in the event of certain emergencies and possible threats . The Student Learning Center can be accessed from the Academic Computing Center, the Learning Center entrance to the Library from the Quad or the internal stairs by the Campus Writing Center. The Student Learning Center can then be viewed as an open area; there is no specific doorway or entrance to it. And once the tutor, staff or student enters this area, there is no exit. Students and tutors are exposed and become vulnerable to any natural disaster or attack that might occur. Once again, it is important to understand that students, tutors or staff that are working or located at the back of the center have no means of escape should something happen at or near the front of the center. With the increasing number of violent incidents occurring nationwide and sometimes even on our campus, it is incumbent upon us as an institution to discuss and create alternative methods that address security concerns and communicate such plans to members of the QCC community. 9 Queensborough Community College Non-teaching Department July 2013 Attachment B1 – Student Activity summary Summer 5/29 ‐ 8/16/2012 Tutoring Self‐Study Total Fall 8/27 ‐ 12/21/2012 # of Students 207 244 451 # of Students 1467 2586 Tutoring Self‐Study Workshop ‐Coffee and Conversation ‐Math for Physics ‐English Communication Total 4403 Winter 1/2 ‐ 1/23/2013 # of Students 17 # of Hours 579 579 # of Hours 4177 310 1 39 Tutoring Self‐Study Total Spring 1/28 ‐ 5/24/2013 47 64 # of Students 1571 3016 Tutoring Self‐Study Workshop ‐Coffee and Conversation ‐English Communication Total 3985 Academic Year (2012‐2013) # of Students 3262 5893 Tutoring Self‐Study/Study Groups Workshop ‐Coffee and Conversation ‐Math for Physics ‐English Communication Total* 4177 # of Hours 30 174 12 4694 # of Hours 9480 484 1 51 9691 # of Visits 4936 6597 N/A 1 96 11630 # of Visits 33 57 90 30 # of Hours 4694 # of Visits 640 620 1260 9480 # of Visits 5684 8738 N/A 37 14459 # of Visits 11293 16012 N/A 1 133 27439 * 1) Total of all students receiving learning support services provided by the Student Learning Center during 2012‐ 2013 academic year. 2) There was a 1% increase of student activity from the 2011‐2012 academic year (volume of 9589) compared to 2012‐2013 (volume of 9691). 10 Queensborough Community College Non-teaching Department July 2013 Attachment B2 – Course Grades and Completion Rates # of Tutoring vs. Non‐Tutoring (C and Above) Student Tutoring 2044 Above 71% Non‐Tutoring 65% 23268 # of Student C and Complete Tutoring 2393 d 85% Non‐Tutoring 22919 69% Tutoring vs. Non‐Tutoring (Completed) (71% of students who received tutoring earned C and above) (65% of the students who did not received tutoring received C and above.) Note: The information above pertains to 40 of 123 courses tutored by the Student Learning Center during the 2012‐2013 academic year. 11 Queensborough Community College Non-teaching Department July 2013 Attachment B3 Course Grades The Student Learning Center provided learning support services for 9,691 students during the 2012-2013 academic year. Although the course grades and completion rates reports indicate that there is a significant and positive effect related to tutoring and learning support by the Student Learning Center, the center still faces challenges regarding specific courses. For example, it did not appear to make a positive difference for students tutored 5-10 hours for BU 203 Principles of Statistics. Two senior Statistics tutors resigned from their positions last summer in order to pursue full time jobs in business; new tutors have been hired but it is anticipated that new tutors need to experience at least one academic year before gaining the self-confidence and skills needed for this subject area. Also, because each Business Statistics faculty member may focus on different topics, chapters, and/or present different formulas to perform specific equations, etc., tutors may initially need time to “learn” the teaching methods, types of calculations presented by instructors other than the one he/she studied under at QCC. The importance of the Faculty Coordinator/Academic Facilitator role at the center is also a factor. During the last few years, CUNY policies/rules are such that potential faculty interested in working as a Faculty/Coordinator/Academic Facilitator for the SLC may not be eligible to do so. This creates challenges including the loss of a liaison between the SLC and academic department as well as an advocate for the SLC and strong source for hiring, training and evaluation of tutors. The center currently seeks Facilitators for Biology, Business, Chemistry, Physics and Social Sciences. Regardless of the challenges previously mentioned, the center will continue to focus on improvement in grades for BU 203 during the next year. 12 Queensborough Community College Non-teaching Department July 2013 Attachment C Student Evaluation of Tutors Introduction Evaluations of tutors and the Student Learning Center are made available to students during the last 3 weeks of each semester. The questionnaires are completed anonymously and placed in a designated box near the Office Assistant’s desk. Overall, students rated the tutors and the center very positively: % of Students Agree/Strongly Agree with Statement 95% Tutor knew subject well 94% Tutor explained the materials in a way understood 94% Tutor asked questions that helped student develop his/her own ideas 93% Tutor gave student useful study strategies 91% Tutor helped student to improve my grade in the course 96% Student would recommend Student Learning Center to other students Additional and specific details regarding student evaluations are attached. While SLC tutors and the center itself were generally rated highly by students, there is some mention of an insufficient number of tutors. To a large extent, this perception of a few people is not surprising; since much of the tutoring is done on a walk-in basis, those students who must wait for a tutor or must return at another time for a tutor, can be very frustrated. In addition, as new tutors are hired and trained, a “learning curve” can be observed; even those tutors who have high GPAs and possess strong subject matter knowledge face challenges during the initial few months. Developing into a good tutor is a process that takes at least a year and usually more. 13 Queensborough Community College Non-teaching Department July 2013 OVERALL 6 5 I was greeted and helped in a timely manner 231 46 4 4 285 The tutor was on time for the appointment 221 54 3 2 5 285 The tutor had a positive attitude 244 31 7 3 285 The tutor knew the subject well The tutor explained the material in a way I understood 236 35 8 2 1 3 285 235 34 13 1 2 285 The tutor was well organized 231 47 6 1 The tutor encouraged me to ask questions The tutor asked questions that helped me develop my own ideas The tutor suggested other sources to help me understand 216 49 15 1 1 2 1 285 221 47 10 2 1 3 1 285 200 44 19 7 1 3 1 285 The tutor gave me useful study strategies The tutor helped me improve my grade in the course After the session, I felt more prepared for my class 213 53 10 2 5 2 285 216 43 9 1 14 2 285 233 37 7 3 2 3 285 I would return for another tutoring session 242 31 8 2 2 285 I would recommend the SLC to other students 244 31 5 2 3 285 On average, how many hours per week do you use the SLC? 3 to 5 6 to 10 11 + No Response Before a tutoring session, I prepared myself by: Reviewing assigned reading Reviewing lecture notes Working on assigned problems Identifying specific questions to ask None No Response 227 37 10 11 80% 13% 3.0% 4.0% 4 3 2 1 Legend: 6 5 4 3 2 1 0 0 285 Strongly Agree Agree Somewhat Agree Disagree Strongly Disagree Not Applicable No Response 120 131 96 97 19 11 For which subjects do you come for tutoring?
